Crease in bear's forehead

Sometime back I heard about how if a bear has a crease running down its forehead toward its nose that it was a sign of a big mature bear. I just read about it again on page 70 of the May/June 2010 issue of Bear Hunting magazine. My biggest bear had such a crease and also this bear I took a photo of in June of 2007 shows such a crease.

Does anyone have a rule of thumb for this? How big or old is a bear before it would get such a crease?

I dont have any rule of thumb, but I have read that numerous times as well.

I guess that if/when a bear gets big enough in the skull, to have his/her "forehead' muscle have a noticible crease down the center, its time to pull the trigger on that beauty.

yes very nice bears for sure. it is a very good clue there are many signs that is one of about 3. 1: crease 2:ears must look very small and be more on the side of the head then the top. 3: must look like a tub with a very large back end and a large gut and not look sleak in gut and back end. these are the 3 that i know are sure tell signs of a good solid bear

I am not an expert on creases, but it seems like somewhere around the 18 or 19 inch mark is where I have noticed them.

This one was starting to develope a crease and it was just over 18 inches and about 5 years old if I remember right.



This one is a bad pic of the crease, but it is there. This bear was 10 years old and scored 20 inches.



This one has a crease going. I am betting he will hit the 20 inch + mark.
