Big Mule deer repaired and mounted ( A Living Memory)

Well I posted pictures I believe back in Dec when I got this, the person had drug it down the gravel road not knowing what kind of damage it could do to a cape. I talked to him quite a bit and decided that we would try and salvage the cape instead of charging him another 75-90.00 for a replacement cape. We both knew that a habitat was more than likely going to have to be built around it. So anyways got it mounted and talked with him on the phone and he gave me the ok to build a habitat around the damaged area. With the total not to go over a 100.00. So 82.00 later this is what I came up with.

Let me know what you think, really interested to know if you were in this position would you buy an extra cape or decide to have a habitat built around it?

So with all being said and done, since we are clode to hunting time, dragging an animal is really bad for the capes, if you are not dragging it down the gravel and just over the ground itself you can have sticks grab hair and pull out large chunks of it, leaving a bald spot on your deer. Better off to carry the cape out.

That looks very good, that habitat covered that up really well. I am always amazed at what people seem to do to their animals or hides and then want them mounted, seems like common sense to me.

If it was me I would try and work with the original cape. It would just depend on what and where the damage was located.

I like the habitat, rather keep my own deer cape. It turned out well.

My guess is that most people would be pleased with the results. Especially considering the circumstances. A taxidermist is not a miracle worker but they certainly try. I think you did a great job. It matters most what the customer wants. I think the addition adds unique character to the mount and will be a constant reminder to the customer on their "death drag" idea. Including telling the story to others if it was epic in nature as well as a reminder of what not to do next time. That unique character makes it neat too.

Joe, That looks great whether the hide was damaged or not. You should offer that to your customers for adding something extra other than just the head. Great job

Well the customer was extremely happy with it. I am glad that he has something nice to put on the wall. And like said it was fun building the habitat around it.

As far as your question goes I don't particularly care for habitat in mounts and for the price of the habitat ($100) vs. a new cape ($75-$90) i would have gone with the new cape. just my

Chris - thanks for the input. I understand about the habitat. Not for everyone. I have started getting to the point I am liking it a lil more now. I myself have so many things on the wall, starting to look at it more and more to break up all the mounts.

 I think the habitat looks great.  I prefer to have my own cape, damaged or not.   I also don't prefer repaired points even if the break occurred during the kill or after.  Just personal preference; the mounts are mainly to bring back fond memories over and over.
