Son's First deer/buck! (Whidbey Island)
« on: October 19, 2010, 09:59:57 PM »
First year ever hunting for my 9 year old son.  We were going to wait until late muzzleloader but decided to modern firearm with muzzleloader.  Our first time sitting was last night and we didn't see anything.  We got out to the pop-up blind tonight and I decided to check the trail cam.  This little buck had been in there about 2 hours before us.  About an hour into the hunt I see him coming towards us and look at my son who must have seen about the same time.  We got the gun up onto the shooting stick and just has we cocked the hammer, he sees us.  I ask he if is sighted in on him and he says yes.  I say go ahead before he takes off, and boom!!  He curls up and I think for sure he is going down.  He ends up staggering off really slowly.  Out of all the deer I've seen and shot in my life this was the most intense.  I thought my heart was going to explode.  We wait about and hour and I can't hold it anymore.  We find a good blood trail and about 30 yards and there he his, laying there still alive but definately not going anywhere.  I already had the gun reloaded and tell my son to put one right in his neck at about 15 yards.  End of story.  His first shot was little back but what an awesome job he did!  The buck  is a 2x1 spike. I've never seen him so excited. The last pic is my wife and my next hunter.  Proud day!

:hello: That is so awesome. Seeing your son shoot his first buck is better than you killing one... :chuckle: :chuckle: Congratulations to you and your boy.  :EAT:

Thanks to everyone who replied.  I know it isn't the biggest buck ever but I remembered what my grandfather has always told me. "Don't pass on something early in the season, that you would shoot on the last day of the season."  I'm going to make a plaque for him and mount the antlers so we can hang it up in our "Hunting Room."

Teacherman- I gotta tell you, It was the best hunt I have had to date, even if it was just a little spike.  He hasn't quit talking about it yet.

Well done patton, you are starting them off right. That's how I grew up, wouldn't change it for anything.

Patton,  Well done!  It was great for me with my 2 oldest son's.... even when the 2nd one decided to get a bigger bull than Dad ever has!   ;)  I think I was jumping and screaming more than he did.  Now I get to do it again with the youngest boy and his sister,  come late archery season they hopefully will get it done on Whidbey deer.

It looks exactly like my first deer, except mine wasn't a forky.  Congrats to the young hunter and "coach".
Nothing witty here.... move along.
