Most Durable Hunting Rifle?
« on: June 19, 2007, 03:50:57 PM »
I've owned Savage, Winchester, Remington, Weatherby and Marlin. My Weatherby .300 mag synthetic is the toughest gun I've owned. I've dropped it on rocks, scrambled through miles of brush and it stays right on the mark with no dings in it.

theoretically I would try to avoid dropping them on rocks, but any weapon made by those manufacturers are good guns if taken care of. (back to the rock dropping reference.)

i usually take it easy on my rifle, a browning a-bolt SS, so i can't really say it's been tortured...but i have a charles daly shotgun my gramp gave me when i was 12 that i have put through hell and back and continues to work like a champ to this day(i'm 34 now). i killed ducks and 2 turkeys with it last year...it's never skipped a beat, just waiting for it to croak, but i don't think it ever will. the best/worst thing is that i'm sure it's a cheapy shotgun....just can't kill it.

My rifle was designed to beat down doors, and bash in skulls, and to work full of mud and blood, heck it came with a fixed bayonet long enough pass all the way through a man's chest. :o

When I dropped it in the talus, and it bounced around like a tennis ball, my brother and I laughed (well he laughed, then I laughed a few hours later).

They left the factory with dings, because they made them so fast they threw them in piles, after test firing them.

The very best of them, sat frozen in a Finnish battlefield for half a year, before the Tikka factory refurbished them.

To me the most durable hunting rifle is a mil-surp. ;)

Turkish Mausers, Mosin-Nagants, the AK-47/SKS, and AR's, are all tough enough to beat most North American game animals to death.

Might have found one.  They have a Savage Americain Classic on sale in 300 win mag, wood stock, for $565.

The Marine Scout Snipers, as well as the Army Snipers have used the Remington 700 for years.....

Theres always something to be said about "Marine Proofing" something, so I guess that alone speeks yards.

I've been damn hard on my ruger stainless synthetic, the old style with the skeletonized looking stock, and before I got the SIms recoil pad it did plenty of getting even.  But it's been through a lot and continues to deliver more than it's owner can even hope for.  Been pretty happy with that gun. :)
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

I have a Remington 700 BDL SS in .300win-mag. I'm not too hard on mine either. Except for a couple spots on the barrel, it looks brand new.

My Benelli Nova is my toughest gun, I think you could use it to pry your rig out of a mudhole and keep on using it.  My
Savage model 12 in .204 gets beat around the most (riding in the truck nearly year round, and hunted with about 80 days a year) and it keeps shooting.  Of course if it cost more, it would probably get babied more.

My toughest is a rifle handed down to me by my dad. A Remington 721 in .270 cal. This rifle has dropped over 40 deer, and 4 Elk. Been thru hell. I hand sanded the millling marks off the barrel and re-blued it years ago. Stock has been refinished maybe four times. Pre 63' rifle, very tough. This has been my most durable rifle. Most used. Most abused.

That 6.5 x 55 should work great. I think it's balistically similar to the 260 Remington. I can't imagine a more perfect deer cartridge than that. Except maybe my 270.  ;)

Built on Remington actions yes, $2-3000+ if you want one built to spec. A buddy had one built for him in Quantico before he got. I'm jealous.

I got a 20yr old Sako FinnBear deluxe and the rifle has worked very well for me. I took the rifle on some very hard hunts in Wyoming, Wisconsin, Colorado, Washington and Montana Its always held up and still looks great !
