Rust on a blued barrel - use oil?
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:43:41 AM »
So I read a thread on the firing line forum. Some guys said that you shouldn't use oil when you're using 0000 steel wool if the barrel has bluing. They said that as rust is removed, the oil will spread it to the rest of the barrel, damaging the finish. Instead, you should just constantly turn/replace the wool so that you're using mostly fresh steel against the gun. Ideas?  :dunno:

Good question!  I'm looking at getting a rusted gun for cheap, and I'm curious as to the repair procedure.

I'll be listening in.

Same here, got a .22 rifle that was neglected, wondering if it was worth my meager investment.

I think it would depend on how bad the rest of the barrel is.  If the bluing is shot and you have to redo the whole barrel, then it does not matter as long as you clean the whole thing meticulously.  If you can save the rest of the bluing then a very light scrubbing with clean steel wool will work.  Allot depends on how bad the rust is.
There's a reason they call it hunting, not killing.

Oxpho-Blu from Brownells.
Strips rust and reblues at the same time. Use with 0000 steel wool.
Rinse, repeat as necessary.
Wear good gloves, lots of ventalation.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
