Whiney puppy
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:42:49 PM »
My pup is about 8 weeks old and when i put him in the kennel anytime i have to leave or hes in there during the day he whines and goes through his whole im lonely routine.  Anyway to fix this.  My whiney ass neighbors are getting mad i guess. Im about ready to tell all of them to go to hell and move back into the city if they dont like it.  I told them he just needs to get use to it and once he gets a little bigger he can just be in the yard. To many little holes for him to escape right now.

Hello

Have you tried either leaving a radio on, or the other option is a wind up clock? Something that makes a constant even sound (ticking), even though it is quiet enough not to bother the neighbors.

Thanks
Scott

I've heard the radio trick as well.....or lock the whiney neighbor in with him to keep him company.  Aren't some of these Wenas folks just toppers.  Mine was pissed because I was shooting at 8 this morning.  He's lucky I didn't start at 6 when I wanted to.

Ya theres some real piece of works out here. I could understand them bitching if it was an older dog barking but not a 7 week old just used to the surroundings and not having momma anymore.  Im just gonna wait till they call animal control on my and ill explain it to them.

Mine did the same thing, I started throwing an old tee shirt over the top of his kennel and tricked him into thinking I was still there. He still starts to whine reguardless if he is home alone or with my wife as soon as my truck rounds the corner to the house though, can't get him to stop that.

put something in the kennel that smells like you like a dirty tee shirt. he'll get some comfort out of that if he is bonded to you.
the clock or the radio works well too....stick with it, crate training can be good stuff for a young pup. once he gets used to the crate, he'll prefer to be in there at times for the comfort.

The only problem with this is that you lose the flavor of the rum with the milk in there....I prefer to quiet things down with straight rum.

Sometimes it is the timing of sleep...Most pups nap different times of the day....also exercise before bed a run or fetch...sometimes this tires them out and they seem to fall a sleep.  I also throw a deer shed in the kennel to give them something to chew on...it keeps them from being bored...good luck.

Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Are you crate training the dog?  Not sure when you say kennel if you're referring to his outside run or his crate.  Training in the crate allows you to introduce the dog to isolation for short periods of time.  They sometimes feel more secure and calm down more.  They tend to develop a feel that the crate is their safe place. It's good to add the scent clues like other's have mentioned.

I had the same thing... What I did was take a pop can or a Soda bottle and put some uncooked "hard" beans in it.. Everytime the dog would wine.. I would throw the bottle or can at her. She only wined in the kennel so I would throw it at the kennel.. It worked for me... You might give it a try...

If you are crate training(which I would suggest if it an indoor dog), cover the crate with a sheet and be very quiet in the room.  When the dog whines slap the kennel with a rolled up news paper immediately when it whines, hard enough to freighten the pup.  The goal of the exercise being that with out seeing you, it does not associate you with the loud noise, but he will start to associate bad things with whining.  It solved it for me.  Took a few days, but it worked well.

Good luck
