I know that this is a dumb question but....  With a trapper's license, can I trap coyotes and if so can I use snares?

No snares are allowed for trapping in washington from my understanding, sure you can catch coyotes in cage traps. Goodluck getting one ever to go in one. They were saying it virtually never happens. :dunno:

Years ago I caught bobcats in cage traps but only one coyote and it was a pup.  Back when snares were legal I cleaned up on coyotes.  I knew that snares were outlawed but wasn't sure if there was a provision for licensed trappers or not.  It would be more than worth the couple hundred bucks to me to buy a trapper's license if I could snare song dogs.

All body holding traps are a nogo theres one you can get with a special permit but I dont know the exact information. Trappers class is free, and the license is only  $41.60

There is no provision for the use of neck snares in WA. Not legal under any circumstances.
There is a permit process for non-strangling foot snares but I don't know anyone useing them except for bear damage complaints. Historically that is the only use for them.

Ok, I took all the paperwork to WDFW at 8:30 today. Dan was out of the office this morning, but his assistant assured me he will process the certificates quickly. Thanks everybody for coming to the class, post pictures and stories when you start catching stuff!

Is there a class up near Lynden? Maybe an online course is easiest without the driving/scheduling hassles?

There is a home study option. I think you would benefit from going to the class but at this late date there will be no classes for quite a while.
There is a manual online from WDFW for download but it is not up to date and the one we use at classes has a lot of good info in it such as the pelt handling guide from Fur Harvesters Auction.
I think you would be best too give George Brady a call at (509)923-2326. He can send you the manual. It will cost $15 plus postage. He could also maybe set you up with and instructor in your area for a one on one session to take the test. Or you can schedule a test after reading the material with a reional office of WDFW.

Just build chicken coops...coyotes have no problem going in there.  It is actually tough to keep them out!

Is there any plans for an east side course? Maybe after the trapping season is over. I'd love to trap. Im a seasonal worker so most my winter is spent in the woods to save me from bord'em.
