Long Island Elk
« on: August 13, 2008, 09:33:44 PM »
I have been contemplating doing a archery elk hunt on Long Island and was wondering if anyone on here has done this?

I have a few years ago, its really thick which isn't all that bad but it gets pretty crowded for a 7 mile island.

Buddies of mine hunted there about four years ago.  They went back but you need to get there early to get a good camp site.   Lots of bear too.   The elk like the tall grasses in the morning.  I think it would be a blast to give it a try.  You also need to have knowledge of the tides.

I've never been, but from what I've heard it gets VERY crowded and it is VERY thick but you can get some monster elk in there if you know what your doing.  Also, I've been told to watch the tides so you don't have to drag your boat way out over the sandbars.

There is no sand bars.  It is all mud so be very careful.   I am not sure what kind of boat you have.  The reason it is crowed is because there is only like 4 legal camp sites.  That is why it is crowed.  There is an abanded road that cuts through the middle up to the top.  If you can find an old map you can see it.  You can use that map to get around.

Yep, good bulls...

Sand bars, mud flats, what's the difference?   ;)

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Mud you sink and your boat sucks down to the mud.  Sand you can stand on and pull your boat over it...  If  you go PM me and tell me what you come with.  The bugs really suck.  Oh ya, call the ranger station for the legal camp site map.

Yep, and a canoe or sled type flat bottom works the best.
