My Dayton tag........
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:29:40 PM »
Well since i found out that i won the hunting lottery after 13 years of playing, i have been gearing up for it.  Running a couple of miles every night, shooting my bow, and trying to get geared up slowly without denting the wallet to bad.  I looks like scouting may be a solo thing cause my hunting partner just informed me that he is taking a job in another state until the hunt starts. :yike:  I am planning on making this a continued thread as i scout and even after the hunt begins.  I get to hunt Saturday, Sunday, and Monday on opening weekend then have to work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  But then i have the whole rest of the season off to hopefully put my tag on the bull of my dreams.  With hard work and a little luck, hopefully one of the posts i put up will have me being dwarfed by a mega bull on the ground.  Oh yeah, if any of you blues lovers have any advice, my computer takes PM's very well. :chuckle: :chuckle:

John,,   form now until Nov. 10 I've got alot going on.  I'm still getting calls and emails with potential hunters inquiries.  This could be our biggest year of operation following last year as our slowest.  The increase in tag numbers has certainly been noted here.  I'll be curious to see how it all shakes out in the end.   One example is all 3 muzzy East tags have sopken on ths phone, however none have booked a camp might do some meat packing.  I do have a group camp of 4 that all drew Wenaha East.  That will be a tough camp asd I told the guys that at least 1 will not tag and 2 will work hard for a dandy bull, perhaps 1 will tag a bull of their dreams.  It is a disadvantage to have never been in the area before they ride to camp.

I am excited but honestly i am just excited for the chance to do something different in my home state.  I have only drawn a cow tag before and it was last year in the area i live in so it wasnt hardest to fill.  All the other animals i have taken have all been otc tags in general units.  Although i do not consider myself a "trophy" hunter, i am trying to get into that mode and try to make the most of this tag.  At the end of the day, no matter what the outcome, i will have a good time and work my tail off.

From some of the PM's I'm getting I must have given the idea this is a slow year.  Actually it is likely to be our best for booking clients.  I gave a couple of examples that I thought were different than the norm but like I said when it all shakes out I'm going to be busy for all 3 hunts.

Best Elk tag in the state! Shouldnt be to hard to shoot a really nice bull. Pass on several and you should kill a 350 bull.
A freinds dad had that tag along with another guy I know a few years ago. My freinds dad shot a good 360 bull and he also passed on the bull the other guy I know ended up killing because it had a goofy rack. It scored closer to 380 if I remember right.

Size or number is not even in my head.  I am not a guy that will eat a tag because i had a shot at a 330 but wanted a 350.  I am like every other hunter out there that goes into a hunt wanted to take the biggest i can, and if it happens to be a flat 300 inch, then so be it and i will be stoked to put my tag on it with no regrets.  I will put the miles on and will put myself through the riggers of what the unit has to offer but it is still hunting and to much has to come together all at once for me to be nieve and call this tag a gimme.  I know what is to offer there, if i have a chance a monster and cant put it together, it will be a memory that cant be taken from me.  I am not at all going in with the thought of passing tons of bulls and only going 350 or bigger.  All i can ask for is to take home the largest animal that gives me the best ethical shot, and if that happens, dream fullfilled.
