Any thoughts on ML loads?

After 20+ unanswered phone calls, crappy customer service, two weeks for shipping and another 2 weeks for some free time, I finally had a chance to shoot my new Wolverine.

I was able to run about 20 rounds through it yesterday and am now starting to look at loads for elk.

My original thoughts were to start out with 200 gr TC Shock Waves with 80 gr of Pyrodex Select since that combo shoots well out of my brother’s older Wolverine.

So I bought a few different types of bullets and some Triple 7 powder (so I could try two types of powder). Well, my brother couldn’t make it so I only shot the T7.

I tried the TC 200 gr Shock Waves with 80 gr T7.
I tried TC 300 gr Shock Waves with 100 gr T7.
I tried 250 gr Hornady SST with 90 gr T7.

I used the 80 gr loads to get on paper and adjust the sites. Then shot a few 300s and ended with the 250s.

I plan on shooting again soon and was wondering what the thoughts were about the bullet/powder combo and if anyone was shooting something similar.

I shot my elk last year with 100 grains of pyrodex pellets and a 300 grain shockwave.  It dropped on the spot, but the bullet did not pass through completely.  Found it under the hide while skinning.  Would have sucked to have to track it with no exit.  That being said, I think I'm going to switch to loose powder this year and considering using some different bullets.

Had very good luck with the dead centers and tmz's. I run between 110-130g of loose powder in all my guns. My current load is a 290 tmz with 110g t7 FFFG.

I was going to buy a knight but tried to get a hold of them. I had the same luck as you 12+ calls with no call back or answer. This was last year. Finally got to talk to some of the higher up guys and they said they were going to get more people to help with that. Sounds like it didn't happen.

i always just use 100gr of powder.. you can experiment to find  a sweet spot, but 100gr is a good starting point, and in most cases in all you will need. I'm running 300gr sabot, but have killed a lot of deer with 240gr xtp or 240gr lead hp.. 100gr loose or 2 50gr pellets..

For deer Im using the 295  Power belts, with 110 grains of 2ff black powder.

I was only calling to ask a few questions before making a decision. I was planning to order online, but the guy told me they had less than 10 of the Wolverines left so I bought it over the phone. He told me they would send it out that afternoon.

A couple days later I emailed them for a tracking number and their response was that it hadn't gone out yet and would go out Friday or Monday. They shipped it on the Tuesday before a holiday.

When it showed up on my doorstep I hadn't even opened it when I answered my phone messages. It was Knight calling me by name and saying they had a problem with my online order. (I ordered over the phone) and that they were out of the straight stock but I could get a thumbhole version. WTH!

I opened the box and they had shipped me the straight stock which I wanted.

A total cluster over there I guess.

I shot my muzzleloader for the first time last Wednesday i had 2 types of bullets both shockwaves one 250 grains one 300 grains.  I shot 100 grains of powder with both and found the 250 grain bullets to be dead on at 100 yards with out moving anything on my gun.  It made my bullet and load choice very easy.

Your Wolverine has the same 1-28" twist Green Mountain Barrel that I bought for my Hawken.  Difference is it's only 22" instead of my 28" barrel, so your mileage may vary-

My barrel loves heavy conicals.  370 gr TC MaxiBall over 90gr of RS prints very tight groups at 100 yards.  When I step up to the 460gr No Excuses bullet, the point of impact at 100 drops 6" and the groups open  up very slightly. 

For me, I just like idea of lobbing a big hunk of lead at elk.  Shots should be close enough not to worry about hold over, and the more smack-down you can put on that bull the better I'd feel about it since a follow-up shot is far from quick.

 I only shot from 50 yards but the 250 SST's with 90 gr T7 shot the best so far.
