ive heard of trappers being robbed by cougars. so that would make me think cougars love beaver

I have followed cougar tracks all around lots of dams and lodges where they were looking for beaver. Another thing they really like is porcupines.

Yes, beaver. They have just about wiped out the beaver around here. Getting into my cage traps all the time after the beaver meat.

Truth is though they are hungry with the deer and elk getting so thin. They will come to bait readily. It didn't use to be that way in the past.
Might be a long wait.  Hope you have patience.

I've called the most cougars in with a large bodied double reed cottontail call.  I always open up the second reed to give low volume rasp to it.  Most of the time when I have had the big cats come in I've been there for more than 1/2 hour working on calling bobbies.  Which means a lot longer set up than I would use for coyotes.

But, I have never intentionally set out to call in Cougars.  And, I have yet to tag one as they were never legal to shoot without a permit back when I did most of my calling.  So guys like Bearpaw probably know a good bit more than I do about the big cats.

I've also heard that 24 Hour Fitness is "The Spot" for cougar scouting.  As long as you are not a 40 something, fat, out of shape dork like me.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
