this is sad.  so young and so dumb, way to many times.  more evidence of not having positive role models in a kids life.

The state will get what it deserves when they release him. Another poacher who will go right back to poaching. Like you guys have said, he obviously doesn't care about the law. If the state really cared about reforming criminals they would figure something better to do with him beside putting him in jail and taking away rights he obviously isn't scared to lose. All he is at this point is an example to others. They aren't reforming him so in my opinion eliminate the reason for jail time all together. States need to grow brains.

WOW a lifetime ban from hunting legally. Don't think that will be a big obstacle for this young chap. I agree with Bofire, where did he learn this behaviour? I think dollars and Time may be more realistic in these cases. Hunting bans would be rediculous

Obviously he has not respected the laws on hunting and he will pay the ultimate price now. He has no excuse for hunting anywhere if he loses his license for lifetime, this will have a big impact in my opinion.

Other than his poaching problem he may not be a menace to society. I did not see where he has faced any other charges. I disagree with taking him out of society, putting him in prison, and making him a ward of the state for all of us to support. Sentence him to mass amounts of public service and keep him productive and accountable for his actions. Throwing him in jail would be too easy and simply cost money.

Hey Kyle, maybe you would be his Mentor ?
Hypocrite huh? I am not placing a deers life above a humans in any way shape or form. He broke the law (several), and should pay the piper. If you think your mentorship would be a good thing then have at it, but for me I say money talks, and if time is needed so be it.
We still have a high crime rate, because our prison/legal system is pussified. Has no teeth!!  Felons have more rights than the rest of us.

What are your ideas about being creative to solve these problems? I am not in the legal world, but am frustrated by all those that abuse the system (NOT JUST WITH POACHING)

As others have said, the only thing that will stop him is to be locked up. I dont think a "liftime ban" will slow him down at all otherwise he would have stopped after the first time being caught.  :twocents: :bash:

Well with a lifetime ban and a few months in jail, I believe those will be the last big game animals he shoots illegally.  And probably legally, doesn't seem like there are to many states left for him to hunt.

Somehow i dont think that a ban on legally taking an animal is going to change his behavior much.  He took 3 illegally...meaning he has no regard for the laws ANYHOW..what is one more law to break going to do?  Some prison time might mean that he is not out and ABLE to poach for a few years...but I'd BET that he goes RIGHT back to it after he gets out.

That's OK. When he's caught doing it again, it will be a firearms charge added to poaching charges with a lot of time involved for a convicted felon. In addition, you can bet there are a few 19 year old young men in MT who will now seriously consider their actions when an out-of-season trophy muley presents an opportunity.

You can't change the sociopaths but you can influence society by strictly enforcing existing laws. I wish we'd be this tough in WA on poaching. We aren't.
