2002 F-350 4x4 front bearings
« on: August 08, 2012, 08:38:32 AM »
quick question, do you use a gear puller to get the hub assembly off? I'm mechanical but, never worked on a front end of anything. Don't know the correct names for parts here...I'm a little in the dark.

I have the hubs off both sides(warn manuals I put on). I have the horseshoe shaped spring off the driver side. The 6 finger hub nut on the passenger side is freely spinning so, I'm sure the innards are gutted.

Do I use the gear puller to get the sealed bearings off at this point? I have the 4 bolts on the backside of the sealed bearings removed as well.

Put the bolts back in the backside but not tight, soak with good penetrating oil around where the hub goes into the knuckle. Usa a BRASS hammer to start tapping on the bolts to drive the hub out. DO NOT overdo it on the bolts you are hitting.

I have everything soaked down really good. Not much room to hit those studs very hard :chuckle: I've got the passenger side popped loose but, it seems like the end of the shaft where the hub engages needs to come off first? I tapped on it and got a screwdriver width apart. Does it all come off with the sealed hub bearing?

Do you the new parts yet? They should come all as a unit and show you what needs to come apart. That should come with new lug studs and all. Maybe a pic of where you are at with it?

Thanks, I had a helper wiggle them while I was tapping with a hammer on a wood block. Everything makes sense now it is off. Three more nuts and I'll have the half shafts out.

My passenger side is hammered....grooves in everything and lots of metal shavings.... Now to take out the half shafts and and get to where I expect to find what remains of some needle bearings...  :chuckle:

I had my upper and lower ball joints and new hubs installed about 15K ago. Within about 1,000 miles these seals on the inside and outside all popped loose. I took it back to Les Schwab in Kent twice asking about them and they said that they "didn't really do anything and it doesn't matter, they all do that". I never felt good about them rolling around loose. Both sides.

Here's the bad side off...
