picked up one of those Bell memory foam seats with the springs under it. Seems to be pretty comfy. About $28. Im going to get a seat post tho that has a mini shock absorber in it as well to smooth things out a bit more. I have no suspension at all on my bike.

The skinny seats that come on the bikes are best if you are going to be doing any substantial amount of riding.

Yeah, I know it hurts.  After some training rides it will go away and you will be set.  The wide gel seats seem good as you sit on then and ride around the house but they dont seem to be the best for hard miles.

On long rides the wide seat becomes VERY uncomfortable as it gets In the way of your pedal motion (has more to do with being able to pedal straight down).

Phelps is right, I've done a bunch of riding and the skinny seats are better for peddle motions.  However I find I usually am so waited down that if it's too steep I'm pushing and not on the bike peddling.  My motorcycle is much more comfy ;)

I don't like gel seats. The design with a space in the middle of the seat I've liked best. I currently have a serfas seat that hurts the first time, but my butt gets used to it quick, then it's super comfortable (no chaffing at all).
Also, I'd second the bike shorts recommendation. You can buy ones that go under your normal shorts.

padded bike shorts and a Selle Itilaia (sp)? let me ride the passes comfortably

Never liked Gel, your weight just shifts around and that will cause new problems, tried wide, didn't make much difference...

I had one of those and replaced it with a smaller seat. Big mistake. Best seat for the money that I've used.

When I was using my mountain bike to hunt with, I used a wide Gel seat, and it worked great. I rode allot differently carrying a pack wearing hunting cloths then normal trail riding. When riding without hunting gear or packs the skinnier seat worked allot better.
