Mossyrock Elk Hunting
«
on:
August 15, 2012, 10:34:24 PM »
I have access to private land in the Mossyrock area and was wondering if anyone had any info on how the hunting is there. I normally hunt Colorado and Utah, however I was not drawn. I know deer and elk are over the counter so I dont if I should get both or just elk or deer. I contacted the biologist for that unit and he wasn't much help.

Welcome to the site. I would say if you have the access to hunt private land talk to the person who has given you permission. They should be able to tell you everything you need to know.

In the Mossyrock unit it could be kind of hit or miss, depending on exactly where the property is. It could be that elk are there all the time too, or maybe NEVER. You either need to get more info from the landowner, or scout it out. You could always just come up and plan to hunt it, if elk aren't there, you shouldn't have to go far to find elk, but probably in another unit, with lots of other hunters. For your first trip up you might as well get both deer and elk tags. There's bound to be one or the other on the property. What's another couple hundred dollars, right?
Definitely don't expect the hunting here to be anything close to what you've probably experienced in Utah and Colorado.

Thanks, I did but he is not a hunter. He owns Xmas tree land and says the elk are destroying his trees. He was up there three weeks ago and seen deer but no elk. I will be heading up there Aug 27to scout. I was figuring the elk were still high since there is no weather yet. Just looking for a lil help because my scouting trips are 28 hour roundtrips.

Elk aren't necessarily at high elevations around here. Many of them stay at low elevations near farm fields where they can get all the grass they want every night. If the landowner says the elk are destroying his trees, it sounds like a place you might want to hunt!
Would you be hunting during the rifle season?

Good luck!!!! Some of the best places for deer and elk on the wetside.... imo
Use to know an old man that had a Christmas tree farm.... Did a lot of work there.... Almost everyday he complained about how the deer and elk would cost him $$$$ a year in damage to trees/killing them/making them not sellable and tearing up fences.... He would never let me or any other people that I know of hunt it.... Period.... Think he died last year.... If I had a westside tag I'd be back down there talking to his son or wife....

I've lived here for most of 40 years and hunting has become more difficult due to the number of gated timber co. roads. However, if you're willing to scout and go beyond the road hunters, there are still deer to be had. If you have access to land with elk, there are three main herds in the unit. After opening weekend (modern), the best bulls are usually taken and the herds busted up. Like I said, it comes down to scouting and effort.

Tree farm? Sweet! I bet you find elk and deer. Especially if its the one bordering the state land in the back. Winston unit just a skip and jump away.

Most of the little tree farms have been bought out, and the big ones usually have 9 feet high fence along property lines (courtesy of WA state). So elk aren't as common as one might think, but I'm sure individual elk can get in. Tree farmers seem more concerned with seedlings getting trampled rather than eaten.
