This will be my first year out going after a deer (new to hunting, not to guns  :) ) and I have a 1977 marlin 30-30 in the gun safe. This will be my setup:

Marlin 336 in 30-30
Redfield revolution 2-7x33 w/leupold rings and weaver base
Hornady Leverevolution 160 grain 30-30

It was either that rifle or the romanian PSL.... or M1 garand. Think I'll start with the Marlin and go from there.  8)

1976 vintage Model 70 in .270 win.  Barnes 130gr TTSX hand loads.
Just put a Leupold VX-6 2x12 with CDS on it.
Love it.

I use a weatherby vanguard .270 with 130 grain federal vital shocks.  Vanguard is so accurate and those federals are just plain deadly.

what do the guys of hunting washington use??  :)

(of course i'm talking about eastern washington for the 130 grains.  150's for the west side)
1976 Marlin® Mdl 336C 30/30 for the West side.
1966 Remington Mdl 742 30/06 for the East side.

Where do you hunt with this set up?  I hope you aren't shooting more than 100 yards  ;)

A 7 power scope is PLENTY for 95% of the guys that hunt deer and elk.

I've got a 2-7x33 on a few of my rifles. I'll take light with plenty of eye relief over the huge hubble telescope most guys think they need.

Well my previous rig was:

Ruger 77VT 308, 3-12x50 Burris Signature, bipod, handloads with 165 grain NBT's

This is still in the works and won't be used for deer this year but will probably be:

Ruger No.1 264WinMag, 3-9x50 Redfield revenge, handloads with 140 grain NBT's

Still need to work up loads for the 264.
Bang...Flop......No tracking required.

2-7 just seems like its gonna give you a good target for what about 150 yards? dont know nwever looked through one but seems like it wouldnt go far. i dunno i guess each his own, i just figured why have a 500 yard shooter if i have a 200 yard scope.  :dunno:

On the combo  mentioned by Stinkyrat, a lever action .30-30, I would say the 2x7 Redfield Revolution is a perfect match....don't really see that Marlin as a 500 yard shooter....

And unless you are shooting at something very small, at 7x power there is plenty of sight picture to make shots on big game at 500 yrds, and like has been mentioned, opening up to 2x gives you lots of room to view for close-in work...again, something that Marlin is well suited for.

And, sometimes you just have to work with what you have.

I can see what you mean if I was hunting in Eastern Washington where I just moved from (Ellensburg) but this rifle will be used in the Eatonville area where there is a tree blocking your view every 20 feet or so, nothing on the coastie side I'd ever consider 'long range'. If a 2-7 doesn't cut it I do have a Nikon 3-9x40 I can swap with.

I really wouldn't consider a 30-30 marlin 336 a 500 yard rifle either, John Wayne might say otherwise though... 8) In reality I wouldn't trust a lever 30-30 past 200 yards anyways, so in my mind the 2-7x33 should work just fine.

But I guess the true test will be if you see a picture of me up here with meat for the freezer... we'll see!

I hope this year I get to break-in my new 270WSM with 140gr VLD handloads on a deer or two.
