Either my Ruger M77 30.06 with stainless barrel and composite stock shooting Federal premiums with 165 gr. boattails, or my Lyman .50  cal Deerstalker shooting round balls or sabotted lead .45 auto slugs.

What I'll never use is ballistic tip bullets. I like eating what I shoot. Borrowed a buddy's gun one time on a boat out at Afognak Is. near Kodiak and his bullets were ballistic tips. Shot a doe at about 40 yards and blew out both shoulders and lost a large part of the backstrap to bloodshot. Too much expansion and fragmentation in these bullets. I like good old soft points. Also I hunt with a friend who insists on using ballistic tips. He regularly looses more meat than I would tolerate.

Looks like somebody else agrees with me, but for a different reason.

I use my Rem 700 SPS Varmint .308 with Winchester Super X 180gr Power-Point rounds... My .308 is a tack driver out to 600yds, although I don't think I would want to shoot a deer over 300yds, 400 if conditions were excellent... My rifle has had quite a bit of work done, and while its more "tactical" looking it works great for hunting as well... Put a deer down in its tracks with one round this morning with it... Pretty good combo.

Winchester M70 Featherweight in 30-06 in a McMillan EDGE stock w/Leupold FX-II 4x33 scope.  Load is 180gr Nosler Partition on 57.5gr of H4350.  I use this rifle for hunting the west side, especially in timber.   Its shorter than my other rifles, lighter, fixed power scope, plenty of power for anything.  I also like the fixed power scope for quick shooting because you're never tempted to screw with it when you should be shooting.

Remington M700 Stainless in 7mm Rem Mag w/Leupold VX2 3-9x40 scope.  Load is 140gr Barnes Tipped TSX on 66.5gr of RL22.  This is my mule deer/prairie whitetail rifle.  It is super-accurate and doesn't kick me into next week when shooting from the prone.  Shoots nice and flat and I can drill shoulders at whatever range if I need to.

Winchester M70 (pre-64) in 300 H&H w/Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 scope.  Load is 180gr Hornady Interlock or Nosler Partition on 74gr of H4831 SC.  Shoots flat, hits hard, lots of history.

AND....ONE DAY WHEN I GET TO HUNT OUT OF STATE

Remington M700 SPS in a B&C Medalist stock w/Leupold VX2 4-12x40 AO.  Chambered in........223 Remington AI.  53gr Barnes TTSX on 25gr of Varget.  Why Not?

No hunting for me lately due to funds, but I use the rifle my grandpa gave me. Remington 700 .300 H&H, with federal vital shock 180 grn, or some handloads my boss did for me.

M197 with HEI  ;)  saves on time and exspense of cleaning, skinning and butchering.

Would like to use my Rem 700 VTR in .308 with 180SST, but my new state has some weird cartridge restrictions.
