ok you bow hunters, Im callin BS!
« on: September 17, 2012, 08:06:22 AM »
I dont care for the idea that you guys out there run'n round playin Indian with bows can hunt areas WAY sooner  :bash:, So, I think were gonna take a stab at archery, who knows might like it better  plus my 14 year old foster girl doesn't wanna hunt modern, she wants to bow hunt, so were looking for cheap starter compounds this week  :o  according to her "Real girls hunt with a bow", and since the 14 yr old boy is currently on the hot seat, shes more then happy to get a little extra surrogate daddy time

so, first and foremost, i have no idea what kind of arrows or tips we should be looking at for deer/elk/bear :dunno: and guess I better go get a few bales of hay to shoot at  :chuckle:

I would practice with whatever broadhead you are going to hunt with.  I also would find something besides hay bales to shoot at.  The broadheads will cut the strings and the bales fall apart.

 :yeah:   Hay bales -  :bdid:
Broadheads get slick tricks... but have her practice with field points.
btw - sooner isn't necessarily better .... rut had not started on wetside.
Compound bow- don't go too cheap.... if you live in greater Seattle area check out Knockpoint, and I've heard good things about the guys at Outdoor Emporium in the SODO district.  However the Knockpoint has a 20 yd range where they can teach her how to shoot.

so she read Hunger Games?

so i have a big, probably dumb, Q about archery hunting regs. i live in covington, thats in GMU454, which is open now, and our area is crawling with deer n elk. If i see one standing in my backyard, and since its not considered a firearm discharge in city limits, can i legally drop him right there?

sorry if this is VERY stupid question but i have not hunted in 30 years, and that was in the backwoods of Tennessee , trying to relearn all the regs.

You have to check on city ordiances, even though it is not a firearm, may be language that also prohibits bow & arrow or "Dangerous weapon" discharge language.

You should be able to, but you might want to read the fine print cause sometimes they have no hunting/shooting in city limits. If your not in city limits I wouldn't worry too much.

I believe that's more of a Covington issue and what the laws are for discharging a bow in city limits.
Legal or not, depending on your property size it might not be a good idea.
Stray arrow hitting neighbors house, or following the blood trail and gutting the deer on a neighbors yard may not be too good for hunter/tree hugger relations.
You then get politicians involved, new laws.... not good for hunters.

Specially if that deer in your backyard is "Bambi" to your neighbors.

In other words, unless your on a lot of acreage and in the middle of said land   :bdid:
Take her out in the woods for the full meal deal.... hunting, not gathering         Just my opinion.

i asked because one of my customers lives a mile away, his property is very secluded, but didnt know if it was legal.

and yes, following a blood trailer into a neighbors patio would be very bad  :chuckle:

No, a left handed bow is for a left handed person.  A left handed person will hold a bow with thier right hand.

Cabelas has a youth/womans bow called the "Diamond-razors edge". Its a 30-60 lb bow and has a ton of draw length adjustment. The bow comes in camo or pink and i believe was on sale for just under $300. My wife shoots that same bow and has killed 2 bucks and a bear with it. Your tip weight should be around 85 for youth. Muzzy has inexpensive yet quality broadheads. Dont forget, the minimum draw weight is 40# and shes gonna need all of that to kill an elk. My wifes draw weight is 45#. Goodluck.
Aim small, miss small.

Muzzy broadheads also come with practice blades depending on the package you buy.  It would be a smart idea to go over broadhead safety with those and practice with those.
