There were 17 of us.

No wonder why we couldnt find any elk in Winston! :yike: Grundy and his hired marksman killed them all.  :chuckle:

Congrats on a bunch of rosies.  I am guessing you guys had some sore backs and legs.
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

Hunted the Nemah for years. My dad got drawn for his second cow tag in 36 years. He filled it last Tuesday morning. Good 600ib plus Rosie! No bulls, but we got meat in the freezer and had a great time!

We camped out for 9 days during modern rifle in the Winston unit. Saw 3 legal bulls that we couldn't get shots at because of various reasons. Saw several cows and about 3 million hunters. It's a zoo (always has been) but this year was really crowded. We hunted hard, steep and deep as they say, but to no avail. Alas, the wily critters evaded us.
We decided to head down again on the last day and work some of the reprod and timber we hunted during the season earlier. I wasn't overly optimistic but I never, ever pass up a chance to get out and hunt. On our second drive of the morning I hear elk ahead and see ivory tips over the brush ahead of me at about 75 yds. He was moving to my right so I ran around the brush pile to cut him off, losing sight of him in the process. As I came to a spot where I thought he might show he wasn't there so I glanced back to the left to find him moving away in the timber. I only had a quick shot so I pulled up, got hair and let it fly. Hit him in 1 lung and the opposite shoulder on a quartering away shot and staggered him. I still didn't have a very clear shot but got him down with the next two. I'm glad I did cuz he was just steps away from a steep drainage that would have made it hell to get him out. We got him out and loaded (quartered) by 11:30. He's a small 4x4 with a kicker on the back left side that makes him a 5x4 but in any case he's a trophy in my book and well worth the effort. Any elk is a good elk as long as it's in my freezer.

It feels odd posting a spiker in a bull thread, but why not. It sort of counts, I guess. Muzzleloader spike from the eastside. Saw very, very few elk, but I saw the one I needed. Spotted it at 5pm, made a long looping stalk in on it, shot it at 6pm, took until 2am to get it out, and taught school the next day like a complete zombie. My few students who hunt thought it was cool; the others thought it was pretty strange.

And I always make fun of those guys who don't take their picture until their animal is about halfway quartered up with blood everywhere. Since I forgot my camera and had to wait for my dad and his iPhone, I'm now that idiot who took the picture too late (other than the sleeping spike pic I took with my flip phone).

I guess I'll post this here too.  Toutle modern firearm, 4x5, taken on the 12th after 10 days of climbing and sidehilling through some pretty steep, wet, thick hillsides.  Managed to sneak in on him before he saw me and dropped @ 49 long steps.  Not a huge bull, but my first branched bull and a quality hunt in my mind.

Great job everyone for your success pics and stories. My brother and I had the best hunt weve ever had. These 2 bulls were together on the second day of our quality elk hunt.

My wife helping me drag a young 5x6 out of "the canyon" on the YTC or Yakima Firing Center.  Muzzle loader, 30 foot shot.  Left the meat pack at home, found a carpet from the car, cut hand holds and it worked well.  8/9 hours of packing.
