Wilderness-6 Me-1

Found a 48 hour window to run up in to the high country to try and find a buck. This was my 7th high hunt and I had yet to shoot a deer on the high hunt (shot a bear the last two years). I couldn't find anyone to go with me so I went as light as possible. I figured since I was solo I could go where I wanted to so I headed to where I was going to hunt in the morning instead of making a base camp. When I got to the area I wanted I threw out my ground cloth and sleeping bag and tried to sleep. At about 1 in the morning I could hear deer walking by quite close. At about 5 in the morning I could hear more deer walking on the rocks. I was a little bummed that that they were moving so early but figured at least they were in the area. Rolled out of the sack at about 6 and walked the 10 yards to where I set up my spotting scope. As it began to get light, lo and behold I hear something walking on the rocks. And then I see that it's a bear
I had already shot mine 3 weeks ago in the same area. I was patient and then the deer started to appear. Watched a couple two points, several doe, and the bear as they all fed on the hillside and worked their different directions. At about 830 I was tired of watching the non legal bucks eating on the hillside so I decided to turn around and watch the other direction. As soon as I had myself repositioned I spotted a single deer eating away from me at about 350 yards. I got the spotting scope on him, zoomed in, counted 1, 2, 3!!! A legal buck! He was not eating slowly so I had to make my move. I ditched the warm clothes and started moving to get a better position. When I reached 200 yards all I could see was his head because the brush was so high. I started to reposition and BUSTED! He takes off in a few leaping bounds and vanishes from sight. I thought for sure he was gone but decided to try one last thing. I went straight up the hillside to try and get level with or above him. When I got to where I was level with where he had been I threw the rangefinder up and ranged it at 199 yards. Then I see something that doesn't look right. On the edge of the trees standing in the shadows I see a deer's rump. I throw my rifle up and it's him! I did not have any place for a rest and didn't want to take the shot off hand so I start working towards a rock that was closer. He is watching me the whole time as I try and conceal myself and when I get to the rock I range him at 185 yards. I put the cross hairs behind his shoulder, slowly exhale and squeeze the trigger. BOOM! And down he goes. He rolled about five yards and then expired. I made the trek over to him and was ecstatic! I killed my first high hunt buck and mule deer! So after I got all the meat and stuff back to my sleeping bag I packed up and headed out. Heaviest pack out I have ever done or care to do again.
