Thanks for the great info everyone. Hmmm now my mind is wondering around LOL. I am leaning towards the smitty now.

Yeah my samurai comes in at under 3k so a 8k should yard me out well :chuckle:

The info is great because I know nothing other then what i have read. I loke feedback from guys that have hands on time with stuff. I am never afraid to admit when I know nothing or little. This is one of them LOL

The line speed is something I never would have thought of.

Carp if the winch you get has wire cable take it off and replace with synthetic winch rope and if you can aluminum flairhead...

Warn 8274. The winch that others try to copy, emulate, etc. The best winch ever built. Remember, you want 1.5x the weight of your vehicle as a minimum for pulling power. You can never have enough. Plus, a winch is nice around hunting camp. Pulling up fire wood, hoisting up and pulling out animals.

The problem with that is the cost. A quality synthetic rope will cost him more than the winch.

I run the smitty on my jeep. A freind had the superwinch (it was crap). Another vote for synthetic rope instead of cable.Your going to pay for it but well worth the extra $. Have you seen a cable break under load? Not very pretty. No need for the Hawse fairlead with synthetic rope, just use the standard roller fairlead,or switch out the metal rollers for Delrin rollers.

If you are properly winching, a cable snapping is not going to hurt anything. Any live line should be covered with a flexible weight (old blanket, etc).

The biggest issue with synthetic rope is abrasion resistance. I've never had an issue with the 150' of 5/16" cable on my Jeeps winch, that has been on the Jeep since it was 3 days old in 1982.

Then you probably aren't aware that a winches rated capacity comes when there is a single layer of cable left on the drum. Meaning that an 8000lb winch is only going to be able to pull 8000lbs when almost all the cable is spooled out.

Every layer of cable on the drum reduces the winches pull by about 1000lbs. An 8000lb winch with only 15-20' of cable spooled out will only pull about 5000lbs.

There is more to using a winch than just slapping one on your bumper.

Plus, if your stuck in mud, the suction the vehicle will stall out most winches. A couple of good pulls, and you will soon find out just how much money was saved by buying a cheap winch.

My preference is cable ver rope. But im a wet sider and the rope does'nt last long. rots and frays when used alot in moist dirt mud and sand enviroments. As for cable breaking, keep everyone out of the way and put a carhart on the line.

Not completely true. Smitty offers a winch with synthetic rope for $50 more than the winch with cable.

I will admit, the 8274 is the best winch on the market but to me it snot worth the extra expense. I ran a M8000 for several years and just replaced it with a Smitty last year. the M8000 is was just to slow and had to rebuild it or work on it every year  :bash:

All my wheeling buddies have the 8274 and it works great with awesome line speed but if your on a budget, its hard to justify. Even the used ones sell for $800 plus but some times you can get them for as low as $400 (if the person does not know what they have  :chuckle: :chuckle: )

Synthetic ropes dont rot or fail from abrasion any worse than cable, they weigh less (30-50lbs over cable) they have higher load ratings, they dont get kinked and compromised from poor winding or bad angles, they dont stab you with frayed wire, you can use them without gloves on, they dont fail and kill people or damage your rig, they dont become a rusted hunk when left unattended for a year, yes they do cost some but like stated you can get some models with it already on the drum.
Yes cable works, yes it has been around for ever.
So did iron sighted rifles but alot of people buy a rifle and then install a scope... :chuckle:
