pup or started?
« on: October 02, 2012, 05:37:32 PM »
so I am looking for another pointy dog, most likely a some flavor of setter, possibly a pointer. In the past I have always started with a young pup and done my own training and have been very happy with the results.

but the idea of waiting a little bit, saving up and getting a started dog has been percolating in my brain, it might be nice to skip out on all the puppy stuff... then again it might suck to miss all the puppy stuff...

my main concern is integrating the dog into my house/family/ current dogs and maybe that I might get someone else's train wreck. I know enough to shoot birds over the dog before I plunk down hard cash, but is there any other tires to kick before committing?

for those of you that have gone the started or even finished dog route- any regrets, warnings, or suggestions?

Stilly
This Drahthaar is 11 months old and came to me a week ago looking for a new home.  He has had extensive training already passed his NAVHDA N/A and his VJP.
I will be hunting him in Montana for the next 3 weeks so will be coming back with a lot of wild bird savey.
Just an FYI

That is a gorgeous dog!
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Just got a pup myself. If I didnt have to integrate it to the torture of small kids. I wouldve went for a started or finished dog.  Not a fan of puppy messes.
