Well I might as well give the story, this was a rough year for me with island hunting. The property I have permission to hunt has a neighbor that has been driving me nuts. He doesn't like me being there and has made several headaches for me. The latest being riding his quad up the game trail I am hunting to yell at me then ripping up the trail instead of turning around. This has left me looking for more dense areas that he cannot get his quad into.

Well I found on DENSE so much that I couldn't get in with my pack and shotgun, so I left them (I also carry a .357), and continued on my belly for more than a hundred yards. I finally see an opening in the brush, low a behold in this opening are a few deer on is a smallish but decent forkhorn, the rest does.

I carefully crawled into position, on my belly, and drew my revolver. All I can see is his back and I didn't want him going far into the brush so I waited until he lifted his head and looked back at one of the does. I aimed below his ear and squeezed the trigger, hitting right where I was aiming. I was 25-30 yds, in heavy brush, on my belly; I feel pretty good about the shot.

But there is a little bittersweet, as the other deer ran off I realized that one I had not seen behind a stump was another buck, a big 3x. But I have hunted this property for several years, I guess next year, he and I will have to meet again.

He was mad too! he ran off, but then kept coming back and snorting, grunting, and pawing. If I had two tags I could have shot him too.

BTW hand loaded .357 mag

Hauling him out was MURDER, one of the most difficult challenges I have had in deer hunting. This brush was too thick to stand in!

I have contemplated actually full on hunting with the .357, but decided not to because I love the massive trama of a slug. however the brush made it necessary for me to use my revolver. I was happy with the results though, and would have no trouble using the revolver again. I was laying prone, but I was amazed to see that it hit exactly where I aimed. I can hit milk jugs at 75 yds with this handgun, but it hit the hair I was aiming at! Yeah lights out!

I thank God for his provision of my Family. My wife has some health concerns, so she is only really able to eat grass fed, when it comes to red meat. I pastor a very small church, and all that grass fed stuff is expensive! With fuel I have about $65 into this deer. My only concern is my boys are getting bigger, and my deer usually butcher out at 60-70 lbs. I really could shot a second one, but we stretch the 60-70 lbs a long ways, and I am brimming with thankfulness, That my God has given me the health and gear to hunt, the opportunity to live in an area that has tons of deer, and that he let me get up on this one and not have to track him in that dense brush.

BTW I know I may come off like a fanatic but that bullet hit not only where I was aiming but on the freckle I was aiming at. I have to believe that is beyond both my capability and the weapons, I think I had a little help.

handgun rules for Wa. 4 in. barrel min., revolver,  and .24-25 cal min. Kind of silly because there are plenty of sufficient autos available, but rules is rules.

I saw a moon clipped 25 ACP revolver the other day that I wanted to buy just to show the WDFW how silly that rule was. I have a Game officer that I chew the fat with from time to time, and enjoy playing a game of stump the LEO.

I did talk to both the sheriff office and Game Warden about the neighbor but they would have to catch him harassing me or the wildlife to do anything and they said they are just too shorthanded. The deputy did tell him that he is fortunate that I have a cool head, because he would have shot him. If he brandished an AR on him.

Regardless, adversity came, I adapted, I filled a tag! Beats whining.

Nice job on the revolver shot!

Semi-autos are allowed in non-firearm restricted areas.

Really that is not what the game department told me. However they also tried to tell me it was illegal to bait deer, to which I said under what RCW, they couldn't find one sighted for anything but baiting bear. It is a misconception.
What RCW or page in the BG manual do you find that?

As in baiting, it does not say they are illegal on page 74, therefore, they are legal.   ;)

Actually the revolver restriction is just in firearms restricted areas. Non-restricted areas that are open to modern weapons you can use semi-auto handguns. Makes no sense to me, but neither do most of the regs.

Oldest is six, my wife is planning to take hunters ed also. Her only hesitation is taking a class with a bunch of junior high boys just sounds weird to her. If she could find another gal to go with I think it would be done.

My oldest is close, he is good with my .22 handgun, and my .357 revolver, but is not quite big enough for the youth model 20 ga I have, but he can't quite read well enough to do the tests and such. He is fearless when it comes to shooting, I am hesitant to let him shoot something that might scare him but nothing has yet. He hasn't got aiming down very well, he just likes pulling the trigger. I have been doing a bit of daisy lever action plinking in the the back yard, but again he just isn't quite big enough. I figure two years, and he will be ready to go.

Have him take the course online. That way you can help him when help is needed and take it at his own pace. Great job shooting with the kids.

PS if you get over to the Spokane area in December , pm me and I can send you home with some more venison. We should get 6 down this fall and we already have 2 elk in the freezer. It would be my pleasure to share with you preacherman.

If this type of behavior is an on-going thing, might be worthwhile to look at investing in something like this:
