How old is the gun ? If it's old, you'll ruin the value of it if you monkey with it.
Thanks for the information! I would guess my rifle being a .30/06 is a long action? I wonder what caliber it would be cool to turn it into? I have a couple of .30/06's, a .300 wsm, been down the .338 road?It would be cool to turn it into something long range? What do you guys think?
Well now..... Step into the new world of REM/AGE barrels......... Go to SavageShooters.com, find a"Vendor Classifieds" and look for Northland Shooters Supply......Jim Briggs is the name you are looking for. He has in stock several calibers of new barrels for the Remington 700, they are made by Criterion, basically a sub of Kreiger barrels. They use a barrel nut very similar to the savage rifles but the gunsmith requirement thing goes away. You simply remove the old barrel, you will need a barrel vise and action wrench for this, then screw the barrel nut onto the new barrel and screw the barrel onto the action. Headspace is easily done, it's on YOUTUBE, and you are ready to go shoot. I re-barrel Savage rifles all the time in my shop and the things can shoot with a good Shilen or Criterion barrel screwed on. This method simply allows the average joe guy, to do the work at home and eliminate the gunsmith. Guys on Savage Shooters do it all the time with great success. You have to be a member to view the website but here is a cut and paste that may spark your interest in joining.Remington - Pre-Fit Rem/Age BarrelsNorthland Shooters Supply has introduced their full line of Rem/Age Barrels. The Rem/Age Barrel Package is a Match Grade Barrel that is completely finished and fully chambered using our new NSS Rem/Age Barrel Nut. As the name Rem/Age implies these barrels are a hybrid combination of the Remington Model 700 Rifles and a Savage style Barrel Nut mounted barrel. The Rem/Age Barrel Nuts are priced at $28.00 with a barrel order or $45.00 by themselves. The Rem/Age Barrel Nuts are designed to work with the Savage Barrel Nut Wrenches so no difficult to find tools are required.Just to clarify, using the Rem/Age system, swapping your Remington 700 Barrels will no longer require a Gunsmith any more than a Savage rifle does. I would like some input from you Remington 700 shooters as to what calibers you are most interested in. Rem/Age Barrels are now being manufactured by Criterion (div. of Krieger). We have found their consistant quality to be a very big asset.Current Barrel Inventory: 20 Practical - 204 Ruger - 223 Rem. - 223 AI - 22-250 Rem. - 6 BR Norma - 243 Win. - 243 AI - 25-06 Rem. - 6.5x47 Lapua - 260 Rem. - 260 AI - 6.5 Creedmore - 6.5X55 Swede - 6.5X284 Norma - 7mm-08 - 280 Rem. - 284 Win. I like the idea of a .260....just wasn't sure I could do it with my action. I am pretty naive when it comes to gunsmithing. How do you guys think a blued action would look with a stainless barrel?Do you have any recomendations for a gun smith in southeastern washington? Thanks so much!
