New Barrell?

Hello, I was reading the other thread, and it makes me wonder, how hard it is to change barrels on a rifle?  I have a Remington model 700 .30/06 that I kind of want to turn into something else.  It is a gun that my grandfather gave me.  It has a cheap butler creek stock on it, and a 18" barrel.  Wondering how hard, and how much $$ new barrels roughly cost?  Thanks in advance.

It's already ruined, 18" barrel?  normally they are 22"

A Remington 700 has cone shape breech face and it is a bit harder to barrel yourself.  If your not familiar with what your doing I suggest you send out to a gunsmith to get it rebarreled.

  You need a gun smith, the bolt face, extractor, .. many things need to be considered when changing cartridges. If just replacing barrel it is easier but still need a Smith. Remingtons 700 are cool because there are tons of options!!

They made factory 700 06's with 18" barrels, I have owned one years back. Its pretty much 600.00 any where you go for a quality Stainless barrel, chamber, fit and true the action. Cheaper if you skip the truing and just square the lugs. Don't skimp on the barrel, the barrel is everything. I get a good laugh out of guys that go all out on a rifle, McMillan stock, Jewell trigger etc and then toss a 120.00 buck moly barrel on it.

Anyone who is good with a lathe should be able to fit a barrel for you. It's really just basic machining.  You can get a premium barrel blank for $300 or less. Rent the reamers and gauges for a couple bucks and you're good to go. Pretty simple project for somebody who knows how to run a lathe.

Well now..... Step into the new world of REM/AGE barrels......... Go to SavageShooters.com, find a"Vendor Classifieds" and look for Northland Shooters Supply......Jim Briggs is the name you are looking for. He has in stock several calibers of new barrels for the Remington 700, they are made by Criterion, basically a sub of Kreiger barrels. They use a barrel nut very similar to the savage rifles but the gunsmith requirement thing goes away. You simply remove the old barrel, you will need a barrel vise and action wrench for this, then screw the barrel nut onto the new barrel and screw the barrel onto the action. Headspace is easily done, it's on YOUTUBE, and you are ready to go shoot. I re-barrel Savage rifles all the time in my shop and the things can shoot with a good Shilen or Criterion barrel screwed on. This method simply allows the average joe guy, to do the work at home and eliminate the gunsmith. Guys on Savage Shooters do it all the time with great success.

Thanks for the information!  I would guess my rifle being a .30/06 is a long action?  I wonder what caliber it would be cool to turn it into?  I have a couple of .30/06's, a .300 wsm, been down the .338 road?

It would be cool to turn it into something long range?  What do you guys think?

I'm thinking the same thing actually, I have a Rem. 700 L/A and I believe it will eventually become a 260. Using the L/A you can seat the 140's out a ways and get amazing accuracy still with good reliable feeding.

You should try to stay with in the .473 case head dimensions but a good smith can open the bolt face for other cartridges. 6.5x284 is another great one.

For me, I am interested in the 6.5X55 Swede which you have listed and in the 7X57; 8X57mm Mauser, the 9.3X62 is also interesting.

If your using your long action and you find the 6.5 flavor of bullets attractive, I would opt for the 6.5-284. It's a outstanding, competition proven cartridge and right at home on a long action.

I've kicked around the idea of trying one Jim Briggs' Rem/Age barrels.  I will say that the Criterion barrels that Jim offers are excellent quality. I had a 6mm BR Criterion which would shoot 5 shot groups in the low .3s and high .2s. I wouldn't hesitate to grab another one.

I have done the blued/stainless combo......twernt for me, I dusted it black cerakote. I just did a 260ai and am plenty happy with it.
