wheres the big blacktails?
« on: October 29, 2012, 01:22:11 PM »
I have seen a ton of deer in the 4 days ive been out...58 deer to be exact...12 of them bucks and everyone was a spike except for one i think was a small fork horn...i usually see a few bigger deer by now and they havent showed up...i watched a big spike chase a doe around for 45 min on saturday gruntin and lip curling, thought for sure a bigger one would show up and chase him off but no luck...anyone else havin the same luck? I decided to hold out for a mature buck this year or eat tag soup and all these spike are sure tempting me after eating backstrap from my sons deer

The little guys will start chasing does quite a bit earlier during pre rut... While the big boy sits and waits for things to heat up then steps in right before she's ready... If you're seeing that many deer that often it's only a matter of time before you run into daddy...

Big old Blacktail bucks aren't going to be out in daylight until the rut gets going good, couple more weeks.

The rut is heating up pretty good. I know of 6 bucks 3pt and better that took dirt naps over the the past 4 days and all of them were chasing does. this last week of October in my opinion is the best time to harvest a mature blacktail.

Saw a big masher on Saturday chasing around a smaller buck, then sticking his nose up a does rear.  I took a shot and missed, ruining both of our days :bash: :bash:

well the rut was starting a little before this hot weather, i just saw 7 does together and not even a spike was around, i cant believe it! the big one i shot at last week was by himself feeding. i have passed on the small bucks and cant even find them now.

firm believer that the big blacktails are in the deep wood. aka in the timber.
Lick it and make it official.

Ive killed a few big bucks and every one has been in a cut...with that being said the biggest buck ive seen was a around 23" wide 4x5 and he was in the timber with no clear cuts around

Maybe you shot all the big bucks outa there :dunno:  I know that is the case in my area ever since hunters started putting up bait stations and trail cams around every corner, didn't take long for most of them to get shot!
