What's your longest shot on a coyote
« on: October 30, 2012, 06:26:50 AM »
While w/t hunting sitting in a field a coyote came out across the field. We were playing with our range finders the day before and where he stopped facing away from me was in the 420 yd area. I didn't have my range finder w/me at the time. With about 10 mins left until shooting hr was over and hadn’t seen a deer I decided to try and get him. I shoot left handed but I couldn’t get a good rest so I shot right handed. I had my gun on a disk w/a bipod. I tucked a jacket under the butt. I have a new scope w/yardage lines and I knew the 300yd line was right on so I put the 400 crosshair on him and squeezed it off. Flame and dirt kicked up where he was at. I shoot a 7mm rem. Mag. With hand loads, 160 gr nosler accubonds 2860 fps. It was too dark to tell if I got him. So the next day after hunting all morning I went down to the field to see if I got him. Sure enough there he lay dead. I ranged it back to the disk 435yds. My longest confirmed kill to date. I’ve shot up 700yds and came close but no body. Love this gun.

Excellent shot!
I rarely get to shoot over 100yds.

I dropped one with my .257 weatherby at 731 yards this summer.  Didn't think I would hit it, but did.  Lucky shot!
Cut em!

Well I am sure a few of us have pulled along shot or 2 in our time but my best shot ever on a coyote was a  take a good guess and squeeze the trigger ...I really do not know how far it was but I can tell ya this . I was shooting my .243 and had it shooting about an 1 1/4 " high at 100 the coyote was sitting up right So I knew it was over 500 So I held the bottom of the center peg on top of his head , basically the bottom of the scope and squeezed one off ..About 5 seconds later he tipped over ....just the long delay told me he was along ways out there  :dunno: :chuckle: Then I think of the ones I have missed at 20 ft because I packed a rifle and they came running out right beside me and I could not get them in the scope ...I can not wait for the ran to go away so I can get out and blast a few !!

Longest was 462yds on an educated guess from yardage charts, generally I will try and do yardage charts for my stands. I ranged it at 460yds on a quick guess based on a 450yd and 500yd point, dialed it in and ended up connecting on it and dropped him.  Checked it later with my range finder at 462.

I use google earth, and measure to large landmarks.  Works almost as good as a range finder, and allows me to range faster... The only draw back is if you move to a stand that is not one you have plotted out, but you can usually do a pretty decent rough estimation...

Probably sent while sitting on the ferry... While using Tapatalk 2

My long shot came this year a couple of weeks ago.  Held the cross hairs on the top of his back line and hit at his feet. It was a young one so it stayed for one more shot. guesstimated the hold again and this time nailed him. With the amount of hold over estimated it out to 450 yrds. He was eating on another yote, so some one else nailed one at he same distance.

Used my Rem 700 .243 100 grain core lokts

Sitting on a ridge line void of any deer activity for 6 hours.... A yote popped out atop the opposite ridge walking directly toward me.... A quick range put him at the 723 yard mark... By the time I got settled in and had a guesstimated hold over it was a lot closer... First shot hit between it's legs.... Stopped right there looking straight in my direction.... Held a little higher and it ate a 243, 100 grain, Hornady BTSP... Ranged at 636 yards where it layed....

I am no long range shooter, but I seen a yote 815 yds. away, and all that I had was my 30-06. I aimed up and I............shot inches over his back  :P

I have only killed 1 yote and it was at 15 yds. so................15 yds.  :chuckle: With a 30-06 180 grain bullet I might add!

similar except 560ish yards with 300 Roy with canjar single set trigger, push it fwd & tiny trigger comes out of the trigger, set @ 12oz, aimed with post @ bottom of duplex reticle & dropped like lightning struck him. steep down angle hit him thru spine between shoulders, came out stomach, volleyball size hole.

Before I knew anything. I shot a coyote at 444yds with my 7mm using some crap 115gn hollow point bullets I loaded up.  Can't even remember where I even got them to try out. I was watching two really nice velvet bucks down a hole.  They started acting nervous than blew out.  A coyote pops up right where they were.  I got set up and it took off, but was replaced by its buddy who didn't make it.  I had just bought that rangefinder and was all excited to try it out is the only reason I even know how far it was.  Had ranged the bucks I was watching. Total luck cause I had no idea where those bullets would hit.  Thinking back on it, not even sure why I had them with me.

My record so far is a coyote from last year, he was walking angled slightly away, I ranged him at 553 yards and settled on the rifle for the shot. I had to deal with about an 8 to 10 mph wind coming from about a 45 degree angle and he was heading into the wind. 243win 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, with just enough lead and holdover, I punched him a little too far back, he did the old death spin and headed for the trees in a swamp area, never found him. Not exactly sure what the actual distance was as he had taken several steps before I could get on the trigger but my guess would be 560'ish or so.
Checkin' wind and makin' smoke.
That's how I roll...
