Your most common bull will be a 5X5.  If you see a good 5X5 don't pass on it.  Drop it in it's tracks.

the elk herds at mt st helens were introduced by teddy roosevelt, he took alot of animals from the olympic coast. when i started hunting elk in the area you seen spikes and small branched antlers, very seldom did you see a 6x6 though they were there. the bodies and hoof prints were huge. 90% of the bulls taken in the 60's and 70's were spikes. The herd itself was second largest behind the bethel ridge or east cascade herds. I do believe over time some cross breeding took place. after the mtn blew i use to see alot of bulls, bigger than the ones i hunted in the early sixties. i always thought this area never had the minerals to grow huge bulls, or the gene pool was weak, but i believe for the most part these are roosevelts

Finally found the picture of the bull I pushed to another hunter in 2001 in Margaret.  This thing was huge as I could not reach my smallish hands around the bases.

Beautiful bull. I know the guy that got it. I believe he was actually after a different one when this one came to him. Right above the hiway.

I had him at about 80 yards up the road from me, circled to get ahead and discovered he dove into a bowl.  I decided to cut below him in case he was trying to get under the bridge.  Having seen the hunter, and I think two buddies up above, I figured if I busted him, I might push the bull past the guy.  I think he had a 20 yard shot on it.  It was nice of him to let me get a photo with it.  Do you know what it scored?  He was lucky he had two guys with him as that thing was a monster in body size as well.

It was the photo I was looking for, I'm no good at scoring and he was bigger in my memory.   ;)

That is a dandy west side bull! I started this thread because there isn't any photo proof of these elusive 300-350" bulls that we so often hear about. I understand being a westside guy myself, after seeing little rag horns all of your life then seeing a 250" bull it looks every bit of 300 or more. That's not a great photo to score a bull on but I'd put him around 260-270
