Which one do I buy!
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:00:44 PM »
Savage Arms Axis Next Gen. 1 Combo               Twist
243   Blued   22"   4   6.5      Next Gen1 camo    9.25   $399.99

Remington 700 ADL Scope Rifle Combo
243   Blued   24"   41 - 5/8"   7.25      Synthetic                   $439.99

Any comment on either of the above two rifles will help me decide. I am sticking with the .243.
Coyotes mainly however I may hunt deer one day when I can no longer draw my bow.
Thanks

The Remington. It's what I would buy.

I'm a diehard savage fan..not familiar with the axis though.  Still my vote is for savage.  They are extremely straight shooters.

I like savage rifles but not the axis. Go with a stevens before the axis or the remington.

The East Wenatchee Bi-Mart has the Remington 700 blued .243 Rifle scope combo for sale right now for 389.00 and the stainless for 469.00 they will go on sale just before Christmas. Last Christmas I picked up a couple stainless combo's for builds. 429.00 each and a 50.00 factory rebate each.

I would opt for the Remington.

there is a reason most of the custom gun makers and long range competition shooters are rocking a M700 Rem.

Remington, no question.  My daughter has a Remington 700 SPS in .243 and her friend has the Axis in .243.  Out of the 2, my daughter's 700 is more accurate, lighter and the action is much smoother.  I shot both and the difference was night and day and this is coming from a Savage fan.

No question about it...the Model 700.  That's a solid platform that's been around awhile.

The axis isnt worth $100 they are crap. You really cant compare an axis v 700. If its a model 10 or 110 v a 700 than its a tossup. :twocents:

Thank you one and all

I will hit Bi-Mart in E Wenatchee omw to late archery on Wednesday next week as I doubt the Christmas sale would save more than 20 bucks!??

Going with the Remington after much deliberation as these were the only two I found in my price range.

I agree that between those two the Remington is by far the better choice.  Much better after market support if you decide to put it in a different stock or something down the road.

One thing to consider since you mentioned it will be used for coyote hunting is that the ADL doesn't have a floor plate that you can drop to empty the magazine.  That is the only advantage I can think of for the Axis and that use, it has a detachable magazine.  I know that for me, when I'm going back to the truck to drive towards the next stand, it's nice to be able to quickly unload the gun without cycling the action to remove the rounds.

Not to confuse your choice, but I would also consider the Ruger American in 243.  It uses a detachable magazine for quick loading and unloading.  If you don't mind the loading/unloading aspect, the Stevens 200 is probably worth consideration too.  Much better after market support than the Axis as almost everything made to work with the Savage 10/110 actions will work for the Stevens. That means down the road you can upgrade the trigger pretty easily, get a different stock, change out the barrel yourself, etc.

I am ok with 'recycling' as I am normally out for the whole day anyway.  I still have until Wednesday to finally decide. I just don't have enough knowledge to make the right choice.

quote "Not to confuse your choice, but I would also consider the Ruger American in 243" Thankyou, dang I was already confused, appreciate all input as I am an archer and need any guidance that is available.

I will look at the Ruger and Stevens and see. So far the Remington.
Thanks again

Yeah, the axis is not a good choice. Its not a bad rifle but it's not worth that price tag. It should be another 100 - 150 cheaper than what you posted. Are you looking at pawn shops possibly? These prices are Cabelasesque.

If you can find a savage stevens its a way better deal and should still be less than that price point. The Remmy is by far a better deal than the Axis. The American is also looking like a decent rifle. Don't forget that marlin also has a decent entry level rifle. If you aren't into accessorizing, their all about the same in getting the job done.

Sorry about adding more choices I know you could put tons of rifles on the list to look at.  But in that same arena as what you started this thread with and then the one person putting the American in the mix.  Which my dad just got one of those this year in 30.06 and LOVES it.  But have you looked at the Thompson Center Venture?

Be sure to check out galleryofguns.com and click on the gun genie. You can enter your zip code and it will give you a special order price for several dealers in your area. Some times the price is hard to beat. I've used it a few times and the guns usually get to the dealer within a week.  I just checked and they aren't showing any Americans in stock right now though.

I picked up an American in 30-06 a few months ago only because Wholesale Sports had them on sale for $249.  I would have bought every one they had in stock for that price, but the local store only had one.  After spending time working up a load for it I have to say I'm pretty impressed with it. It doesn't have the finish and overall refinement of some of my more expensive 06's, but I think it represents an incredible value.  Most of my other 06's prefer 4064 with the Barnes 168gr TTSX bullets, but the American prefers RL19 and shoots very nice groups with that combo.

One of my favorite coyote bolt guns is a Remington 700 though (in 22-250).  Nothing at all wrong with a 700, and they are super easy to upgrade if you choose to down the line.  I tend to believe that if you ever want to sell it you will do much better on the 700 than an Axis.  Used 700's are pretty easy to sell.

I am a big Weatherby fan, especially the Mark V's, but the S2 Vanguards seem to be a strong value.  I have an 06 Mark V Ultralight that I like a lot.  I just checked on galleryofguns.com and a Vanguard in 243 delivered to a local dealer would be $508 plus tax.  That is a bit more than the original prices you posted.  I think all of the S2 Vanguards come with a sub moa guarantee now, but I have little doubt that you could expect similar accuracy from the 700.  If it were me I would buy the 700 or an American and spend the extra money on a scope.
