Muzzle Loader Hunting

I am thinking of buying a muzzle loader for elk next seaon. I want to buy one now, so I can get comfortable and practice. Any suggestions on what make, model, etc to buy? What type of shot is best to kill a big mature bull elk? I want to learn. Gotta start somewhere...so here I go!

You are going to get many, many, many suggestions.  I have two Knights that are both very accurate.

I have a Knight Western Disc Extreme in .50 cal.  I shoot sabot loads and the Speer 300 grain bullets are doing very well in my gun.

I shot six shots tonight into 2.5 inches with a peep sight.  That is my best so far and I hold my muzzleloader back with my eyes.

I highly recommend Knight rifles.

I am biased but hands down - Knight DISC Extreme with a Western Kit...

Today - Not on a new one.  You can get a 52 and shoot 45-70 rifle bullets

I don't hunt muzzy elk yet (come on MS tag) but a neighbor and his buddies seem to fill alot of late season Coweeman elk tags.

Though I had a small, er maybe medium issue with my Knight Bighorn this morning, I think I still love the gun and hope to some day shoot an elk with it.

trigger froze up

Took the cap off and took the safety off, tried to pull the trigger and nothing happened, did what I could while in the field and got no where. Called it a day at noon since I didn't think it would do much good to throw rocks if I saw a buck and came home and tore into it. Took it apart expecting to find dirt or gun powder but didn't find much, blew some compressed air through it, added a couple drops of oil and nothing, trigger still wouldn't move. Put the gun back together figuring I would take it to a local gun shop and get their opinion but decided to see what would happen if I applied a little pressure with a screwdriver between the trigger guard and trigger and it popped loose. Took it out and fired it 3 times and it worked fine.
Dont know what caused the issue, gun gets cleaned every time its fired and the trigger assembly was lightly oiled last night.

Not sure if its related (probably is) but this morning I had trouble getting the bolt to lock into the cocked position, pulled the bolt out of the gun and put it back in then it cocked.

I had the same issue,  it was lock and wouldnt fire.  Took it home tore it apart and the trigger was rusted inside.  I keep my guns clean and never had a problem.  I had never taken the trigger appart though till then.  Brush, oil and youll be golden.  Its a muzzle loader and they all are maintenance!

   i have a wolverine 209 and a black diamond  which i bought for $250 each used and they both work great.  the knight stuff is spendy and if you have the coin go for it.  i would stay with a 50 cal.  mike w

I like the more traditional look of the NON-inlines myself.  My wife and I have both been very happy with our Underhammers.  Plus, I don't see any reason to get a .54 as a .50 will do the same job with less powder and sometimes cheaper bullets.

Plus it is very satisfying shooting a gun that you did the finish stock work and metal work on yourself (kit) although you can find them already built.

   I've been Muzzy hunting Elk and deer for over 15 years in the 574 & 578 units with the same huntin budddies. We all shoot something different from Knights to CVA's. I shot a CVA for years and broke down and bought the Traditions NW Magnum last year and love this muzzy. Shot a nice 5x5 bull last year with it. Very light and comfortable shooting.
   The reasoning behind muzzy hunting for me at least is the late season when the snow starts flying and pushes those monsters down from higher elevations and way less crowds. Welcome to a brand of brotherhood muzzy boys!

I have a Knight 54 cal inline and she shoots great. 
I have taken elk and deer with it no problem. 
I am shooting 300gr of Dead Center Polymere tipped boat tails with sabots and 2 54/60 Pyrodex pellets with a musket cap.
I have never had a problem with it and it has never let me down on a shot.

I shot the Knight Disc Extreme and love it, my buddy picked up the Vortek Ultralight Northwest Magnum .50 Cal and it seems to be a very nice gun, nice and light too.

Comes with all the different types of nipples you would need for around here.
I love 'em.
Super accurate, and very simple to clean.

I've gotten about 8 of my buddies and buddies of buddies to get them, and they are never going back they love them so much.

Hell..... my lazy brother (DuckDude) actually left his stainless Knight Bighorn loaded in his garage for a whole year! When it came time to hunt again, he pulls it out and is all like, "Dang it! I left the crap in there, damn..."
But then, in stead of cleaning it out, he just went in the back yard, and pulled the trigger.... then BANG!! it went off without a hitch!

All clean and ready to reload.

How many guns can you say have that kind off reputation....

Just saying I love them, not saying you should leave it loaded....   lol
