Anyone fish for Tuna?

I know I opened it up and expect smart comments, maybe from Ellsburg about it being like Cougar...      But seriously, have any of you fished for Tuna and what did you use (lures) and methods to catch them.  Any information would be great.

I haven't but a buddy of mine fished last Wed, Thurs, and Friday. 40 miles out of Westport. The boat landed 100 fish and they averaged 22 lbs. Once they got on fish they used live anchovies. If you need any more info let me know and I'll get it for you.

Don't know how, when, where, or what to use but I have always wanted to give it a shot. I bought a canner so I could can some up, I was going to stop at the dock and pick up a few fresh ones but haven't got that far yet !!

I canned 14 pints of tuna last week.    Man thats good stuff.  I know wher to buy fresh tuna down in Oregon (Charleston) just not in Washington.  I'd like to get some more to can here pretty soon.

Pope, take lots of pictures... The slap is the sound... When you spike them the tail starts slapping the deck and it gets crazy, fish blood everywhere. Some of the best pics come from out there.

Try this... Take a loin and cut it into 1 inch thick slices, marinate in yoshidas teriyaki sauce for 30 minutes, get your BBQ as hot as you can, spry something on the rack to keep this marvelous beauty from sticking to the rack, toss it on for 30-45 seconds a side, if it is still pink in the middle it is perfect, if it is not pink, and it has turned white and flaky you might as well feed it to your cat if they will eat it. If you overcook it you will never eat it again...

went out of illwaco, 55 miles out, trolled rubber squid 50-70' behind boad. was told the fish think the boat is a bait pod and the wake from the motor is feeding fish. bait is trolled somewhere in the wake.

Nice photo of that fish out of Ilwaco.  Nice water conditions, too, with a beautiful day to boot.

I've had one experience with an unnamed Westport charter outfit that obviously "retrofitted" (meaning threw some 1" mats on the floor and called them "berths") their salmon fleet.  It was downright awful.  The head was filthy, the cabin was in disarray and dirty, and the berthing situation (hot, cramped and uncomfortable) would make any Chinese immigrant smuggler look like Conrad Hilton.  We boarded about 3-4 hours after they came back from another multi-night trip, and I'm not sure the captain had slept in awhile.

Anybody have a better outfit they can vouch for departing from a Washington port?

I've never fished for em off the WA coast... just down in Mexico.  I threw and trolled flies for em mostly.  Went after the bigger ones with live bait.  Would like to try the Albacore things sometime though.

Sport boats were getting fish 25 miles out. One boat had 20 and 1 had eleven on jigs. Ocean is really flat we were getting the last of our crab pots in the 15th was the last day for commercial crabbing. Lots of sport boats trying for coho today it opened from above aberdeen down to oleary creek. Some fog in the morning.

I've done it once. We used jigs like jimkirk showed in his picture, but we were hand-lining our fish.  That is by far the most fun I've ever had fishing.  We probably caught 30 fish or so and we were about 35 miles off Westport. 

My absolute favorite way to eat them is to just marinate the loins in some italian dressing for about 6 hours.  Then make a boat out of foil and put them on the bbq.  Like WDFW Hates ME said, don't over cook em. They dry out fast.

Had some sunday night.  A buddy went out of Ilwaco and got 22.  They had to go 65 miles to get them.  Said they just threw live anchovies and let em swim around until hammered.  He said it was pretty cool.  You could see the lil buggers pull on the line when getting chased than WAMMM.  Line just starts ripping off.  I gotta try this some day.
