Montana Antelope hunt
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:50:09 PM »
Hey guys,
My brother and I have been wanting to do an antelope hunt next year in 2013, thinking of heading to Montana or Wyoming. We both have always wanted to go on this hunt. We are both are very respectable hunters.  I know there are some units that are a "guarantee draw" or an over the counter tag. Anyone have any decent ideas of possible areas to go? Never hunted there before and really want to get on it now, to start making a plan! Suggestions  are appreciated!

I drew the 700 tag this year.  My boy and I went and hunted hard for 3 days and barely saw a goat.  90% winterkill 2 years ago + EHD this spring.  The only 'lopes we saw were over amile away and running (5 of them).  Hardly an animal alive anywhere close to where we were.  We saw a couple on private land, but nothing we could get on.  Pretty disapointing for my kid (13 years old and worked this summer earning the money to pay for half his tag) and myself as well.  We talked to a couple of locals and were told it will be 5 years before it is even worth hunting again.  Even most of the breeding stock is dead.  I don't know if it was like that all over the 700, but we didn't see any goats until we were well west of Billings.
We saw plenty on the way home from Big Timber almost all the way to Rock Creek, but those tags are harder to draw.
My advice...?  Go to Wyoming.  That's what I'll do.  I think Montana has gotten their last dollar from me for a while... :twocents:

Spent a week on the road through montanna, wyoming, and idaho.  Saw way more antelope in idaho than anywhere else.  Not sure about public vs private land - but saw plenty and some big herds (30 or more in one group).  This was mainly between idaho falls and boise...

I never really thought about Idaho! Wyoming is definitely an option too. Anybody know anything about Idaho?

Idaho is difficult to draw.
