scoring and submiting a posible tropy buck....question
« on: November 28, 2012, 09:28:35 PM »
Here is my question folks,

I shot and posted this buck on the late ML hunt. Now to put things in perspective.....YES i got super lucky. My goal was to go out and fill the freezer, however this guy came into play and i ended up connecting. Ok....pics are crappy and to be honest i have only shot 2 other whitetails in my life...both 3x3's. I was deep in the unit and all by my self so i cut the head off and packed it out as well as the quarters. I truely thought this was an average  mature whitetail, as i mosty shoot muleys and this did not seem to be overly big. However once i got this home...folks were saying.....um.... trophy......i felt kind of dumb, cause i could have caped it out. I took it to a repuatable friend on this site, who has a state record bull elk score in ML and he gross scored it at 144 1/4...... still not that big of a deal I thought..then i went to the this site:

He looked at my deductions and said this would score 140+. So here is my question for you that track these things....as I am not a trophy hunter. Is this site a reputale site?   Is it updated regularley? And would it make sense to pursure this score. I think for my daughter and two boys (12,14,16) it would be a cool to see dads name in these numbers. Again...this is new to me.....I am a meat hunter ( mainly elk hunt).....and i would apprecaie any adive as to how to procede. The skull right now is in the freezer.

NW big game records book? Yes, reputable. Have it officially scored 60 days from the day you killed ut and enter it.

The book is reputable but not totally accurate.  What I mean by that is that you have to pay to put your name in the book.  The book does not have all of the trophy animals taken in Washington State and probably less than 50%.  My guess would be somewhere around 25% at best.  The idea behind the book is good but with all of the muzzleloading hunting in the last 15 years that has taken place in the State a 140 B&C typical whitetail is an awesome buck for anyone to take but not in the top 20 or more that have been taken in the state.  the Blue Mt Foothill muzzleloader tag just by itself has produced at least 10 bucks in the last 15 years that are over 150 with at least three that I know of that are over 160.  The game biologist that is over that area will tell hunters that a 150 class buck is something that is very possible and taken regularly during the rut.  Congrats on the buck and a 140 class whitey is a monster in my book.
