Blacktails still rutting?
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:11:18 PM »
Saw a huge buck today that was all swollen and rutted up, but left about 2 seconds too early and I had no shot. Are they still rutting right now? Seems late.  :dunno: Anyone else seeing rut activity still?

The peak of the rut should be over, but a few will still be rutting.  Until the last doe is bred.  Right now is about 3 weeks from when I see the most rut activity Nov 10.  And I know I've seen fawns born later into summer, some more than 3 weeks after the others.

He looked and smelled like he was at his peak. I knew it was really late. He was super swollen and when I chased after him on his trail, I could smell him and he was extremely stinky

O Believe me they still look and smell like they are rutting and they are still searching for does but they are not as dumb as they were a couple weeks ago ... I have been seeing a few deer the last few days . I hope it snows up in the hills above my house before the Dec 8th because it could get real good right now if that happens

The does generally come into heat around the first week of November. If they're not bred at that time, then they come back in 28 days later. So that would be right now. The bucks don't care if it's a month late, they'll happily breed any doe that is in heat. So it's up to the does when the bucks are "rutting." There could be another rut the first week of January.

I have a question on the same topic- I bought some rattle sticks and some synthetic mule deer in heat scent. Will the scent work for Black tails? They only had that and whitetail and I figured the mule deer would work better but I have no idea if I am just wasting time. I have never hunted like this (rattling, scent) always spot and stalk or just sitting in an area that looks good. Nothing yesterday or this morning.
