might generate another story from me though.........

So I was up in the Twisp river and I had this buck at about 40 feet or so and I was packing my 25-06.    He was quartering away, and I was staring at the grey ghost of old.  A GIANT recessed two point.  Bases about 6 .5 inches, about 4 inches of mass all the way out to the ends of his clubs that were almost entirely covered with "moss".   I so wanted that buck but was in the three point or better side of the river.   I thought for sure one of those mossy points might qualify, but I let him walk.   HAUNTS ME to this day that I didn't shoot that buck, but I was too afraid of breaking the law.   What a niave *censored* child I was.   People break the law all the time and suffer no consequences.

It's ok you shot a 2-point in a 3 point area. Just use some of my points because I shot a 4 point in a spike area.

ok, not really, but say you shot one and it turned out the the 3 pt you were shooting had brow tines that were 1/8th inch 2 short.

What would you do?

It says here that everyone already shot the deer, so saying you would shoot is kind of moot.  :chuckle:
Tag the thing and take it home, its impossible to tell an 1/8" just by staring at it through a scope no matter how good your glass is.

Am I wrong or did the minimun antler length for elk use to be different? I remember it being 3" but I just looked it up and it says 1" is the minimum. Was I wrong all these years?

I would shoot it because it's close enough to a 3 point, browtines are counted as points too..

1/8" too short? who really has a tape measure in their pocket anways. if it looks like an inch, shoot it!

I would shoot the buck.

Then I would post about it on Hunt Wa and wait for all of the holier-than-thou guys that have never done anything wrong and were born with a perfectly formed set of outdoor ethics to condemn me for page after page.

 :yeah:

That 2-point has eye guards that are well over an inch.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

was hunting some stubble a couple years ago, spotted a nice little 4 pt mulie.  we'd have shot, but we were on a ridge and a rig was directly below us, watching the deer (100 yards or so in the open).  for several minutes nothing happened.  the deer watched the truck, the truck watched the deer.  he had decent forks both sides and 2 inch eye guards (10 pointer to you back-easters!  :chuckle:  ).  deer finally got spooky and started off, and the kid at the truck started shooting.  hit him and the buck ran over the hill.  we all gave chase (private land, so it's kinda friendly out there) and we spotted the deer with it's lower jaw blown off.  a finishing shot was issued, and the kid came over the hill soon after.  i helped him gut the deer (high schooler and his mom.  didn't really know how to do the bloody stuff).  i held the legs and instructed his cuts.  why didn't he blast that buck when he saw the eye guards?

This thread is an ambush to draw out the ethically elite who would never make a mistake or shoot anything but a trophy.
Funny!!   :stirthepot:

Oh crap!  They're on to me.   :chuckle:

Wait until you hunt a four point or better area and see a big three point with real short eyeguards. Thats a tough pill to swallow on the long ride back from Wyoming. Especially when you see a warden, tell him about it, and he tells you, you were crazy not to shoot it! :chuckle:
