Cougar
« on: September 08, 2008, 09:43:14 PM »
While out bowhunting for deer Saturday I had this cougar come walking down the road right to me completely unaware of my presence. Since I've failed to get pictures of cougars I've seen in the past, my first thought was to grab my video camera out of my fanny pack and take some video. I got about 5 seconds worth and figured that was enough. Now the cougar was only 35 yds away, I took 2 steps to my right and was around the bend in the road and out of his sight. He still didn't see me (I think because i was in the shadows). I then went to full draw and waited for him to come around the corner but he never did. After a couple of minutes I peeked around the corner and he was gone. So close!

...I took 2 steps to my right ...

Betcha a dollar it saw you move back just before you drew, and bailed up or down. It was probably lying there with its chin on the ground watching you look for it!

Great shots! Wish it was a hero shot though...

That is a feat to get even 5 seconds of video on a cougar in the wild, damn near as cool as killing one.  Way to go!

Great job on the photos.  The big cats are the best.  I have seen 6 in the wild and only got pictures of the one I shot and they didn't turn out well due to the snow storm.

Very nice, what time of day was that?

It was 11:00 AM.
I went back to the spot later that afternoon to do some calling. I first set up and called for a while 200 yds back down the road, then walked up to the spot where I had seen the cougar earlier that day and something moved in the brush right below the road, who knows, it could have been anything.

A few years ago I came across a herd of mule deer running around and "circling the wagons". I couldn't figure out was going on, then saw a cougar about 150 yds away sneak across an opening. I saw him a few more times but was never quick enough with the camera. I got him once in the corner of the frame without knowing it at the time, that's him in the second picture. By the way, all the deer got away.

Thanks and sorry for the thread hijack!  Nope that was Idaho last October!  He was with his mate too!  Got him while deer hunting and it was one of the coolest experiences ever!!!
