Bobcat

Took my first bobcat yesterday morning.  Called for an hour or so and was just wrapping it up.  Decided to look over one ridge before I left and sure enough there were three big cats.  I drew back and smoked the first one with my rage expandable.  One of the remaining skirted up the tree I was next too and the other ran of about 40 yards and then just watched me, i think he was waiting for the other to make it out of the tree safely.  I used this to my advantage and posted up next to the tree to keep the cat up there.  I ended up getting a shot at the other one, I thought itwas a clean miss under (shooting down steep grade). When I recovered my arrow however I found hair on the broadhead, a totally clean shaft and very little blood on the veins.  I spend the day looking but couldnt find him... think I just nicked him.  As far as the third cat went, it was an easy shot but due to the shooting angle I couldnt be sure of my arrow path and therefor didn't shoot.  All in all it was an easy double and had I made a better shot a triple cat kill with A BOW!!!! 

Any thoughts on what I should do with the cat now?  Mind you I can't afford a mount or anything I was just thinking of doing the fur? 

Also weird question but has/does anyone eat bobcat?  Any good?

Nice cat. I have heard of people eating coug...dont know how good bob would be. Some people say coug is the best game meat...ps...sent you a PM you need to read.

Good thought.... its already in the freezer I never thought to just keep it in there until I can mount it!

You cant keep it in freeezer until you mount it, thaw it, skin it, and have it tanned. Should cost around $100-130 for that, they might skin it for you too. This is what I did with mine.

you can freeze it whole ..But I would not wait 2 years before having it mounted ...Ears get freezer burned and then its hard to turn them ..you could even skin it and fletch it and put it on a stretcher and let it dry ...but you have to know what your doing ...talk to a taxi about it !

It has to be CITES tagged within 20 days of the end of the season. I wouldn't freeze it whole for long. It'll start to feezer burn in 6 months. Seen it done. It is really hard to skin when it starts to burn.
If you are capable of skinning, fleshing and drying the fur you can get it garment tanned for less than $30. Moyle Mink and Tannery in Heyburn ID does an excellent job but it need to be ready to throw in the tan.

Well, you guys are doing your typical B.S. This is what I did and it worked for me. The cat was tagged BEFORE the end of the season. I don't know why guys have to try to be so opinionated about something you don't have the facts about. Gives us a break. If you guys are such experts, then maybe you should be a taxidermist. 

HUH? I do know the law on CITES tagging. I have tagged 100s of cats and have taken care of them too so I think I've a pretty good idea on their care.

Waz up dude?  I am working 60-72 hr weeks but plan to enter the Washingting Predator Classic Contest in January.  At least get a skull trophy mount.  I love skull trophies.  I have a bobcat skull.  They are small but I have mine on a display shelf with other small skulls.   You can get them mounted on a plack but I perfer just the skull by itself.  Especially with a bow I would fork out the money for trophy.   Darn cats do this.  I have had this happen a couple of times.  Call Call and nothing and as you get ready to leave you see or hear them.  They seem to come in only so far and sit and wait.   Nice job man.  I recently bought my son a bow and would sure like to harvest a predator with a bow.  They are sure small targets.  How did the deer skull turn out?

Nice job with the bow! I love bobbys. Charlie did a frickin sweet full body on one of mine. The skulls are cool too. I have one display on my nightstand. My kids are finally old enough they leave it alone Just the tanned hides are cool too. I can't wait to get out after them in another month or so.

I have ate cougar and it's not bad, have no clue about bobcats.

Damn . . . . . CAMPMEAT take a chill pill or a happy pill or something.  Maybe lay off the alcohol.

Humptulips IS AN EXPERT when it comes to small game and CITIES. 

Also what a couple have said about freezing a cat whole is also true.  Putting them in the freezer whole doesn't give them an unlimited amount of time to have them mounted.  They will freezer burn.  They are a thin skinned animal and they will freezer burn faster than a Big Game animal.  Ears are typically the first thing to start freezer burning.  Than the toes.  These thin skinned animals can be a real PITA to split, turn, and flesh when they are freezer burned.

I personally wouldn't leave them in the freezer longer than you have to.  You should be pretty safe for 6 months as long as you properly wrap it to prevent the freezer burn.

. . . . . .and that is coming from a TAXIDERMIST!

Can't believe nobody mentioned this.......you can sell it to a local taxidermist, may get $150.00 for it.
