It is sad it has come to closing roads on public land!!! like i said before once gates get shut they dont like to open.. A few years down the road you watch this area will be walk in only year round! The state and tribes need to grow some balls get together and manage these areas.. Its permit only for us so why not make it permit only for natives?

I'd rather walk in to hunt and save the herd, than drive and continue this slaughter. :twocents:   and when that's your only option right now to somewhat controlling these killings, everybody should come together instead of bitch about some "right" taken away. Funny thing is, nearly all the bitchers don't hunt, access, nor live near this area.  :twocents:

I have hunted down there many times and shed hunted lots of those ridges for years... Do u realy think gates will stop poaching??? Its the same as taking away guns and saying there will be no more murders! Adress the problem where it is and closing public land is not the problem! I hate seeing this happen to this herd, now with the gates the poaching is still happening but we just cant see it!

I've kind of been thinking about this argument in my head, as well.

WDFW does not have the manpower to enforce the law. That is a simple fact.

Close gates from 11/01 to 05/01 every year. I recently skied about 2 miles behind locked gates
and saw over 100 elk and deer yarded up in canyons. With amount of snow there is no way poachers will access these areas if gates are closed.

Based upon personal observations all of the poaching takes place near roads and areas easily accessed by truck, ATV

I would take a locked gate/decommissioned road any day of the week and twice in Sunday. That has been my bread and butter for years. I say lock all the spur roads 24/7 365. I can only imagine the potential of that local herd even before the migration occurs.

There's going to be a meeting in E-burg the first week of the new year with representatives  from DFW to discuss the road closures, and the impact's that will take place, there's an article in last weeks daily record, They will be discussing the impacts that users of the land have on wintering herds of Elk and deer, I cant make the meeting but it would be nice if we had someone from WFW attend, there's not going to be an easy answer to the issues that face the region because so many user groups are effected, not just hunters, a big section of the area was effected by the fires last year,  there's going to be erosion and some of the best way to let the area recover is limiting access until things have recovered, my opinion of the area would be to have more seasonal closures, granted theres still going to be people that don't abide by the rules, but its a step in the right direction, Having lived in the area for over 30 years and recreated here for over 40 I have seen the area go from one that was enjoyed by the masses to one that is enjoyed by the very few, with the developments that sprang up along the national forest boundary and different property owners fencing off access roads and posting there property, I stopped hunting there 25 years ago, because of limited access. Let the area recover, limit access, do away with the true spike rule, and well see the bull to cow ratio return to a sustainable level.

Please Oppose HB1495 and HB1496 – Tribal Access to State Lands and Hunting-related Enforcement

Copy and Paste message:

Dear Community Development, Housing & Tribal Affairs Committee:

I am writing to respectfully request that you oppose
HB1495 - AN ACT Relating to access of tribal members to state lands; and
HB1496 - AN ACT Relating to hunting-related enforcement actions involving tribal members.

While I do hold the Washington State Indian Tribes in high regard, I am concerned that both of these Bills are vague, and will result in prejudiced consequences.  HB1495 would give preferential treatment to tribal members that would not be available to any other class of citizens.  HB1496 would remove jurisdiction from Washington State law enforcement personnel in at least some areas where they now have jurisdiction; they would be required to surrender it exclusively to tribal authorities when a tribal member is involved.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your contact information]

You guys don't pay close enough attention. The indians have had the green light from the state to take all they want in the Entiat unit. Thats why things have changed in the(247).
