AR-10 Build? Noob here
« on: December 17, 2012, 11:53:09 PM »
Ok....................pause.................ok  :chuckle:

I have been looking at getting the DPMS LR-308 pic below. I want it for shooting a long ways (plinking with friends), and for hunting (deer, bear, elk etc.). I have been thinking about it for a while, and it really only has a good long-rang barrel that I like and not much else. The stock is lame, and the handguard is lame also  :dunno: :P

I know it is not too difficult to build an AR-15, but...is it much harder to build an AR-10 :dunno:

And yes, I want it in .308

I know...everyone asks  :chuckle:

It is not any harder to build the 10 over the 15  You will at least want to change that crap grip out. It is the smallest/biggest upgrade to make that gun comfy! You can pick up a ace stock for not much money as well and swap that stock out later if you want. The a2 stock really is not that bad but There are much better stocks. Or save your money and buy a PRS.

I just did a little research online and it tells me that it is difficult  :P  :dunno: It looks like I have to buy an upper and a lower from only one brand because parts don't match up the well with AR-10's  :dunno:

Would a 20" inch barrel be long enough for shooting 1200 yards or so (I would not be shooting game at that range) :dunno:

Your question was is it harder to build a 10 over a 15. The answer is NO, Buying the right parts is on you, but that does not make them harder to BUILD :chuckle:

Yes you have to make sure you buy a lower and parts kit and parts that all match up. Some parts on a ar10 build are NOT interchangeable. BUT they are no harder to build.

Oh and on your 2nd question if you are wanting to shoot that far I would go with say a 24 or + I think there is a few that are like 26. The added barrel length will give you a added velocity boost

:chuckle: I know there is a few companies that sell full complete kits. Then you just buy the correct lower and throw it together

A 20 inch bullbarrel will work just fine. If you get a longer barrel, it will be to damn heavy for you to enjoy. My AR 15 had a 24 incher on it and I did not like it at all. Go to www.snipershide.com and look around on there.

I was just watching Larry Vickers shooting long distance out to 1200 yards. He was shooting a 338 Lapua with a 20 inch barrel.

A word of warning.
If you want to use it for hunting, AR-10s get heavy fast.
You start adding 20" bull barrels, hogue grip, PRS stock, quad rail, and a scope
You'll be packing a 14+ lb weapon, unloaded
One shot. One kill!

Everyone knows you are talking to a 16 year old HS student correct????

He can not even legally purchase the lower...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Lowers are funny. You have to be 21 on the 5.56 lowers because you can turn them into a pistol. I am not sure on the AR-10 lowers if you have to be 21 to buy them. Now if you are buying a built rifle then yes 18.
