Still Hunting JBLM
« on: December 18, 2012, 06:52:39 PM »
Well i got back from Afghanistan last week and been out hunting twice since then. I saw lots of sign and deer crap!! So I went to one of those spots again and saw a doe, she busted me though and took off. I also had two grey foxes run up to within 10 feet of me, so I thought that was pretty cool. Wish I had more time till the season ends, but i will keep trying to the season ends.

This place is not at all easy to hunt.

I'm hoping to spend more time scouting and hunting on post next year, if I'm not successful on a high country hunt.

All blacktail hunting is pretty tough.  There are a lot of deer on base though.

Welcome back. I'd bet those grey foxes were coyotes. Good luck chasing deer.

If I don't deploy in the next couple weeks I want to get out for some scouting.

I've been doing both "hunting" and scouting this entire year.  I saw some sign, misjudged the distance on one doe, ran across two bear (didn't see them, but they were close), let a young coyote live, saw a grey fox, and a, very, very, large Porcupine (biggest one I have ever seen).  It was so large I, at first, thought it was a young Blond bear, but it turned, slightly, and I saw its tail.  Learned a lot about hunting JBLM, this year, and will be back next year with force.  Unfortunately, only ten days left and I will be out there every day I can; until the 31st.

I agree the BTs are hard to hunt (morse so on JBLM), but, based on the one doe I saw, their bodies are large enough to be well worth it.  Misjudged the distance, on her, because the ferns covered her body and her head was real small making me think she was too far away.  Had I seen her body, I would be finished hunting, for this year.

Good luck to all who are still trying.
