Ammo Brands .223
« on: December 21, 2012, 08:10:40 AM »
How are the different brands for shooting out of the AR's? I'm looking at Wolf ammo 223 55gr full metal jacket (bi metal)?

I'm thinking anything at this point is almost better than nothing?

thanks

I've never used them and nobody I know uses Wolf. I've been told they have a coating on them, like a lacquer, and it's bad on your barrel. I'm sure you'll get an ear full about accuracy from the perfectionist on here. I use the cheapest I can find, except Wolf and use them. Bulk, PMC etc.

Wolf cases are lacquered which can make deposits in the chamber after a lot of rounds. Just use a chamber brush and give it a good cleaning each time. The ammo is dirty but has decent accuracy generally.

If you want it just for plinking then wolf will go bang just like any other.  At least from my experiences. I wouldn't expect them to be the most accurate out of the gun but it should poke some holes in paper for you.  But like you said anything is better than nothing

For cheapo russian stuff buy silver bear. It's still steel cased but its plated or somethign instead of the "polymer" coating on wolf.

PMC Bronze is my favorite plinking ammo in brass. And it's reloadable.

Big R in Colville has a ton of Fiochhi 50 grn A-Max ammo in 200 round plastic ammo cans..$119.99 each. They must have 100 ammo cans on the display minus the 400 I bought.

The wolf laqured stuff jams the most when the gun starts to heat up. If you are just shooting a round once in a while its OK but after it heats up that Crap get stuck on everything. Don't know why it affects AR's so much because it does nothing to AKs.. they just chew right through those lacquered bullets.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

FN, steyr and HK rifles can go through wolf .223 ammo without any problems.  I don't know why it is either, but seems only ARs can't cycle wolf well.

Every ar I've been around shot wolf ammo with no problems. Not accurate and very dirty, but goes bang 100% of the time.

I saw a guy shooting some weird plastic cased rounds out of his AR the other day at the range. They were like shotgun shells only for 223. Never seen anything like it.

ive had several stuck cases using steel ammo in AR's.. Had to use a cleaning rod from the muzzle end to get them out of the chamber. Steel cased ammo sucks in AR's, but its better than nothing. Steel in AK, no problems.. I wouldnt bet my life on steel .223

I have no problem firing wolf through an AK. However, I find it a bit too dirty for an AR. back order some Lake City or PMC from Cabelas.  :twocents:
