muzzie newbie question about savage
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:58:12 PM »
okay so im planning on buying my first muzzleloader, and was just curious about the savage in the latest gun digest.  its bolt action..... wtf? is it washington legal? and what is the bolt action for?   sorry but i currently know $&*% about muzzle loaders but i dont understand the point of the bolt action.  however im very fond of my savage 111 and saw that the muzzie also has the accutrigger.  if the savage isnt wa legal then my choices for my first ml seem to be between a traditions or a thompson.  dont want to invest TOO much money on my first, as i expect to change my mind on whaty i want after a year or two.

I am not exactly sure which Savage you might be talking about, but I am not thining not would be Pac Northwest legal.  All the Savages that I have seen use 209 ignition.

The bolt action part of it is not a problem but the ignition system is.  This is an example is a Knight DISC Extreme with a Western Kit installed.  Remove the scope and the rifle is Pac Northwest legal.

In this picture you can see that the cap is exposed as required by the State.

I was in Wholesale Sports (Kennewick) this week and they had a camo Extreme there.  I have been suggestingto them for awhile now that they were missing a great gun from their inventory.

The other thing about the Extreme it is versitile in the fact that you can switch it back to 209 scope it and use it in other states or during regular rifle season as I do.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

 :yeah: :yeah:
That would be the exact setup I'd use if I planned on muzzleloading another year.

I really like how the cap is protected.

I've hunted deer and bear for four years with muzzleloader so I'm not an expert but I'd recommend picking a reasonable rifle and then work a lot harder with the powder and projectile combos, finding exactly what groups and performs the best.

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

just to confirm for you, I have a savage Muzz, and the only ones they make are dedicated 209 primer only, so not legal for WA muzz season. It is neat that it is made for smokeless powder though..

Savage does not presently produce muzzleloaders except on a custom order basis. I'd be leary of what you're looking at as it may be a discontinued model.

My first was a  T/C Northwest Explorer.  :bash: It's barrel twist rate is 1/48 which is not good for sabots. Most agree that a 1/28 twist is better for sabots. With sabots, my bullets were actually flying sideways through the paper. And its hammer is pot metal; mine broke twice. And it tends to.....not go off when you pull the trigger.  It will almost always fire on the second try though. :dunno: Maybe she likes a little foreplay. :o I tried many things to improve the reliability. Setting the cap tight...setting the cap loose...Different brands of caps...different nipples...Backing out the breech plug a bit to bring the cap closer to the hammer...sending it back to T/C....making sure the firing pin was lubed up and sliding good..etc....  Click....

So after a day of hunting, we decided to clear our rifles to see if they would have gone off had we had a shot.   Click...  I was not about to spend the rest of the season wondering if that golden moment would be ruined by that rifle.

I took Sabotloaders advice and bought a Knight Disk Extreme with western kit.  It's a whole different class of rifle.  You can tell when you pick it up and shoulder it.  It's heavy, but I think that makes offhand shots more stable.  And it was only $150 more than the T/C Northwest Explorer.   :twocents:  And I shot a cow with it!
