R1?
« on: December 20, 2012, 11:21:14 AM »
Had some good land to hunt whitetails because everyone got theirs.  Three 4 pointers and one 5 pointer.  When I had my turn to hunt to my surprise in the late season I couldn't get the 300 win mag to pattern good at all causing me to cancel my hunt to bag my first buck of 25+ years of hunting.  Trying a 150 grain bullet and I think that might be the problem and need 165 or even the 180 grain, but don't know. Some think it was my prostaff scope at the range?  Want to hit 200 yard shots.  Is the Remington 300 win mag 150 grain core lock a good load.  Or just get a new gun the next time I have a turn on good land?

I doubt this many bucks will be harvested again before my turn but would like to take the gun out next time to the range and have it sighted instead of having more questions or at least know what questions to ask.
Don't read my post if facts hurt your feeling.

Not sure but I think those might do better with a bit heavier bullet.  My -06 loves the 165 grain bullets at 2800 fps, but that is a different round.

what twist rate is your 300wm?  Mine (1:10)loves the 165 nosler bt's  I had to really work to find a good load with the 180 noslers.  Imr7828 & reloader22 has been good to my gun.

I just reread your post....  I would definitely NOT use 150 gr Core Lokts out of a .300WM.  My experience with 165 gr CL's out of the -06 is they blow up big time, one was a neck shot at about 70 yards and the other was 100 yards where I hit the rib just below the spine.  With the smaller bullet and higher velocity of the WM, yikes.

As my name states I like my .300 with the boss system, and it likes the federal 180 partions factory anmmo. I would not go any lower grain on deer , but for varmits I would but haven't tried.

I agree with lokidog. If you want to use a 150 grain in your 300 Mag, DO NOT use a Remington Core Lokt!    :bdid:

In a 150 grain you need a better built bullet. A bonded bullet, either Nosler or Hornady, would be good choices. Or a 100% copper bullet like the Barnes TSX.

The .300 Win Mag has been my favorite big game cartridge for 25 years. In all my experiences, it's hard to beat a quality 165gr bullet. It's the perfect balance between weight, trajectory and speed, the 165's have been extremely accurate out of many Rem700 factory rifle and customs I have or have owned. Almost all factory 300's are a 10 twist, my most accurate .300 Win Mag was a custom I had built with a 11 Twist Mike Rock barrel. Right now my load for the .300 Win Mag is.

.300 Win Mag
165gr Nosler Accubond
79gr RL-22
Fed 215/ Same accuracy with a CCI 250
Win brass
3.450

What kind of speed you getting with this load?  3300+  "26in tube I assume"
I run 77 1/2 gr and get 3308fps w/good groups with 180gr Ballistic tip
