Margeret Unit Cow Hunt Report !
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:55:32 AM »
The other day I put up a post asking for a little help from anyone who new anything about the Margeret unit. I want to thank Meat hunter for his help and the rest of you who posted some tips.....I am also wondering what happend to the trhead because it up and dissapeared....................Anyways we got there friday and started looking around in the part of the unit were the weyco map said there was the most damage by elk and the most animals. We instantly starting seeing tons of sign and then Bull after bull after bull.........we saw about 40 bulls in total that day .....I started to get a bit worried because we had not seen one cow.......
We went and got a room down in castlerock for the night then got back up there first thing in the morning were it was more of the same...........lots of bulls and a few really nice groups of other hunters who were seeing the same. so we just kept driving to different spots that looked good , glassing cuts and humping a few stands of mature timber..........then we came across a huge cut in a giaint bowl with stands of mature timber on both sides and a alder groe on the bottom. As we were glassing it we heard shots directly above us so I looked up and saw some cows about a 1/2 mile up but I also noticed an old skid path that led up that way off of the road we were on.......so we got in the truck and hauled ass up there, parked and started down the the road when we ran across a couple of other hunters glassing so I asked them what was up.....They said the had shot a cow and were waiting to go after it.....then I asked if they minded if we took a pop at the other cows that we could see about 500 meters away. Then as we started to creep down the road we saw an elk pop up that appeared to be the one the other guys had shot.....so I waved them up and I lazed it at 178 yards.....he got down and prepared to take a shot and finish it, then all of a sudden the other cows started barking at us and showed themselves I lazed the big one out of that group at about 200 yards, my buddy put the bipod down and prepared to shoot......I told both shooters when they were ready to shoot to let me know then I would count them down that way it would hopefully be just one blast and both animals down .....well to my suprise they both said they were ready very quickly, so I counted them down and it sounded like one big shot, I was pleasently suprised at the precission, but happier with the results.....I watched two cows go down !
I was happy for my buddy and for the other hunter as well...........then the work started....It was about 3 in the afternoon when he shot, it was about 7 pm when we finally rolled out of there with my buddies elk, the packing of the elk out of there about killed both of us, we are both 48 and not fat asses but not fitness freaks either..........so when we got to my house later that night we finished prepping it for the butcher and we woke up sunday morning we were both extremely sore........got it to the butchers and were presently suprised that we had 370 pounds of hanging meat ! Jackpot ! anyways I look forward to putting in for this unit again next year being that I have 9 elk points.....hopefully it will be my turn !    here are some pics and thanks for the info !

Peace

Backstraps!! Yeah baby!! I had a Margaret cow tag a couple years ago and got one. I like that place. I'm surprised there's no snow on the ground. I checked the Forest Learning Center Cam the other day and there's still some on the ground and what look's like critter tracks.  Good job guys!

nice meeting you as well. i was the younger one packing up to leave. I cant believe how many bulls are down there in January. we only saw 1 bull that was a stud but many respectable ones. again, congrats on the good eats.
