Deputy Ruben Garcia is listed in critical but stable condition, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff's Office received a call from a woman in the West Valley shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, telling dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend had a weapon and was threatening her and himself.
Garcia responded to the scene and spoke with the woman for several minutes before leaving, said Officer Chris Hegstrom, an office spokesman.
Shortly after midnight, Garcia saw the suspect’s silver Ford pickup truck near 83rd and Deer Valley avenues and conducted a traffic stop, in part to ensure the suspect was OK, Hegstrom said.
The truck pulled into a gas station parking lot where Garcia approached the vehicle. Witnesses said they heard gunshots and saw Garcia fall to the ground as the suspect fled.
Police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after the shooting and found Garcia on the ground bleeding from his wounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Garcia was flown to John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital, where doctors have not yet been able to perform surgery, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.
Peoria police later located the suspect and attempted to stop his truck, according to Amanda Jacinto, a department spokeswoman, but the man would not pull over. Instead, he fled into the desert area near 83rd and Happy Valley avenues where he began firing at officers, she said.
Responding officers exchanged fire with the suspect and then noticed he was not moving and would not follow commands. A SWAT team responded and approached the suspect’s vehicle where they found the man dead.
It is not clear whether the suspect’s fatal wounds were self-inflicted, she said, and authorities are withholding his identity until his next-of-kin can be notified.
Garcia's shooting comes one year after sheriff's Deputy Bill Coleman was shot and killed while responding to a burglar alarm near Anthem.
The office was planning a memorial service for Coleman at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Garcia was shot multiple times and described the wounds as life threatening.
"I just met with the family, we’re praying that he can recover," Arpaio said. "He's a...tough guy, old school."
