Canon 70-200 f4L IS vs 70-300 f4-5.6L
« on: January 26, 2013, 01:36:38 PM »
Well I am staring to look at adding another lens to my bag and initally was set on the 70-200 f4L IS. That is until I saw the 70-300 f4-5.6L IS. Can someone tell be the real world pros/cons between the two. I like the 300 for the longer focal range and is not too much more in price so I was thinking it would be worth getting over the 200.  Where will I see a real difference besides the obvious focal length. Thoughts?

You need to decide what is more important, the added reach of the 70-300 or the extra stop of light in the 70-200. To be honest I would go with the 70-200 f4 IS and look for a Canon 1.4x to use when you need the reach. :twocents:

Cool thanks. That makes sense. I didnt think about the extender and with that keep the f stop. . Always good to ask here with all the knowledge.

Keep in mind that you will lose a stop to f5.6 when you add the 1.4x.

Most big bucks are right at dawn and right at dark.  I struggled for years never getting the shot.   GO FOR LIGHT, and get closer.   I have missed so many BIG BIG bucks because I didn't have the glass

I think what bone is saying is go with the f2.8 ;)

I have the f4, and as phool mentioned the 1.4 extender. It is  way lighter (wt wise)  and "cheaper" alternative of the f2.8 version.
But I find times where I would like or need the 2.8 just haven't been able to swing it yet.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Really helps. Yeah the f2.8 would be ideal if I had the money and could justify it. Im not that good yet  :chuckle:. Think I saw one in the classifides but a little short yet.

Just clicked on bobs link. Yeah thats the one I saw.

Depending on what you intend to shoot with it you will find that you seldom use it at 2.8 so the f4 would likely be a better buy until you really need the extra stop. :twocents:
