Problem with a new revolver

We just bought a little 38 special revolver.  Occassionally, upon firing, it appears that the cylinder release moves forward and then sticks when, I am guessing, the cylinder moves slightly sideways.  The next shot when the trigger is pulled simply clicks with no mark left on the firing pin.  I put a drop of oil under the piece to see if it just needed a little lube to slide back in place but did not seem to make a difference.

Any ideas?  I will be returning to the gun shop on Friday with it.

Is it used? If brand new, strip it down and get all the packing grease off, then use a light oil like rem spray.

   You don't say what brand the gun is, but when I fell into a creek with my S&W J-frame revolver on, I dissasembled it at home to make sure all the water was out of it, and was amazed at all the parts, and that they were mostly all interconnected.  Revolvers are a lot more complicated than you would think!

I'm not comfortable disassembling it.  It seems to be pretty clean though.  I have lubed the ejector rod and cylinder release.

It sounds like the problem is with the internal timing parts that you can't see.  And they are many and complicated.  I would send it back to the manufacturer.  You can do that yourself, without going through an FFL dealer.  As long as you are sending it for repair, you can UPS it right to the manufacturer and they can fix it and send it right back to your house.  Call the manufacturer.  They may want to send you a repair order, and may even send you a box to ship it in!

what brand is it? was it new or used? the rugers are pretty easy to take apart as ther are only a couple of subassemblies.. the taurus/smith designs are more difficult, and once that sideplate comes off there are all these intricate little pieces.. the rossi's are built by Taurus now. All the brands I just mentioned are pretty good about their warranty's.

BTW if it's a taurus open the cylinder and try to turn the ejector rod shroud.. they come unscrewed, and when loose can cause the cylinder to lock/be hard to open.. and all it takes to fix it is to unthread it and put a drop of blue loctite on the threads.. dont really think thats your problem from your description though...

yep take it back.. they should fix it.. dont have any experience with the new charter company, but they should fix..

I got a charter arms revolver too. Depending on the ammo I get a similar failure. It is not the pistol, it is the ammo in the cylinder that dislodges a little bit with the recoil so the projectile extends out of the cylinder rubbing on the frame as it rotates. So I only use hollow points in it for clearance sake.

Last night I lubed the cylinder pivot pin as well as the cylinder release tab and the center recessing pin where all of these meet.  I worked the parts back and forth quite a bit while watching my picture shows.

We shot  20 rounds today with both ammo types and did not have a malfunction.  Hopefully, there was just a little burr or spec of grit that was causing problems.  Still don't know why it would allow the hammer to fall without hitting the firing pin.  I'll be talking to the dealer and the company but it looks like it will work fine.

Thanks for the suggestions.  It does seem to like the heavier bullets better as they are most accurate.

No. Those are Winchester Super X, 44 S&W SPL, 246 GR Target/Range
