Scouting
« on: September 27, 2008, 05:57:27 PM »
Just got back from a 3 day scouting trip in the Methow. It was not as successful as I was hoping it was going to be but it was fun none just to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Started out at the trail head Tuesday in the mid 60's maybe closer to 70's. 7 miles later by the time I reached camp at around 6800 feet it was cold enough to see my breath and the wind cut through my clothes like a sharp knife. I Quickly set up camp, gathered some wood, threw on some warmer clothes and went exploring. I had only scene the land via internet and on maps so the 1st night I was just trying to get familiar with my surroundings. Next two days I spent hiking my butt off up and down ridges and trying to find vantage points to glass from. The weather stayed really cold, but was perfect for hiking up and down those steep hills. Unfortunately I only saw 3 does the entire time! and that's it...Did not see, hear, or jump any kind of animal other then those does. Not sure if the weather (cold, clear nights) had something to do with it or my tactics are just off. I also noticed that there was hardly any sign of any kind of animal....no tracks no nothing. This is only my second year hunting mule deer and I'm still trying to get the hang of it. But I was up way before light positioned for glassing and stayed in location till dark....I'm wondering if the area I am in has a sparse deer population?? Was the winter really bad in that particular part? Anyway I am not sure, I'm a little worried for the upcoming season because I am just as unsure of the area now then I was prior to my trip over. I'm open to some tactic suggestions, and if you hunt the Methow and have the time PM me and I will share where I was and see if you have some insite...I DON'T want and am not asking for you to give me a hunting spot....just would like a little mentoring. Thanks guys...Here are a few pictures.

looks like you found a lot of nice tamarac. You never know you may have been in more of a transition area. I dont know that area at all I have only fished the methow a couple of times. All i can say is dont give up and it looks like you found a good place to hike and enjoy life in the wilderness. I think there might be a few guys on here that will deffinatly help you out if you ask them nicely. Good luck.

Head into town...you can see all the deer you want.  ;)

But seriously, ....cool pics...still looks like a good time. Could be a transition area...maybe be lower in elevation, would be my guess. I am not a methow xpert like many on here but have hunted their quite a bit.
