Which Scope On This Gun?
« on: February 16, 2013, 03:48:53 PM »
Have a Cabelas Ltd. Winchester Model 70 Super-Grade Lightweight .257 Roberts.  Mounted a DNZ one piece low mount on it.  Following are descriptions and pictures of three new scopes I have sitting around.  However I am not quite sure which way I should go.  Would appreciate any thoughts and as to which one you would go with and why.

First photo.....Nikon Monarch 4x16x42 BDC

Second photo....Vortex Viper 3.5x10x50 BDC Just barely makes it without touching barrel-cannot go any further to the rear of gun due to mount base meeting underside slope of scope.  However eye relief is good in that position.

Third photo.....Trijicon AccuPoint 3x9x40 Crosshair Amber Dot

* I like all three when looking into them.  As a side note, I prefer the Vipers BDC over the Nikon's (although ok).  Trijicon is sweet, just not sure if twice the $ amount sweet as either of the other two scopes.  Might be good trading stock.

That Vortex sure looks sweet on that rifle! I think you ought to send me the other 2 though.

Beautiful rifle! Love that stock.  I like the look with the Nikon on it.

The Vortex looks like it is to close to the barrel for my taste, and I prefer the higher power scopes. My choice would be the Nikon. The wood in that stock looks awesome. :twocents:

Played around with the group little more.  Initially I was leaning toward the Viper, but I found out that although it was a dollar bill width off the barrel on the front end, the Vortex scope covers will not fit.  Not enough room between the scope and barrel.  Perhaps it was an omen.  Oh well...one down. :chuckle:

throw that trijicon on there and be part of the cool kids trijicon revolution and send that amazingly performing monarch my way i have a 270 that needs an eye on it  :chuckle:

seriously though i think the monarch looks sleeker and im also a nikon fan especially of their monarch line, have the exact scope on my 243 and wouldnt trade it for nothing

gorgeous rifle btw

I don't care 50mm scopes myself. too bulky. I also don't like Nikon's BDC with the circles. So I guess that leaves the Trijicon if those are your main options.

All three are great glass wise with little difference.  BDC on Viper is a little more to my liking (small dots vs. small circles), but both are close as far as that reticle.  Have another Nikon Monarch a 4x16x50 on a Browning .325 WSM, so I'm used to it.

The Trijicon is probably the easiest on the eye and that small amber dot really shows up in dimmer light.  Just not sure that if I want to mount it vs. using it for trade material, as it is twice the $ difference of either of the other two.

Since the Viper has been eliminated, I guess I see how the Monarch pans out.    :chuckle:

Sweet gun my old man tried to buy one in a store, they were out. Lot of good scopes out there, I used to buy Bushnell Elite, because they were a little less money and pretty good optic, but I think they are up there in price with everyone now.  I have a Sheels Paragon scope, Burris, Bushnell, Leopold. They all work fine. I had to take the Leopold off a mag, wouldn't hold zero, works on a 243.
