Wife's Manastash Muzzleloader Cow Tag
« on: September 27, 2008, 09:58:32 AM »
My Wife was drawn for a Manastash Cow Tag, one of 25. We Have hunted Umtanum Unit and were not successful. SO we thought that going up higher to Manastash might improve our odds. Due to moving accross state we have been unable, despite our best efforts, to fit in any scouting time. Hoping to make a day trip tomorrow. Would appreciate any advice to point us in the right direction. THANKS NBK  :dunno:

I just got back from early archery in the Manastash, LOTS of elk in Shadow Creek first week of season. Go past Taneum Campground until you get to 3330 go towards Buck Meadows after MP 7 take either 123 or 127 and look around that area. Shadow creek is off of the 127. 123 splits and one branch connects with 127, If you get out and walk around between these roads at first light you should be able to find a cow. Also, stop and talk with Len and Gwen Dawson, They are camped at the intersection at Gooseberry Flat right off the mainline, they have been there since August and might be a lot of help, plus they are just good people.

I had that cow tag several years ago.  Got a nice lead cow off of the Whiskey Flats area.  Also saw lots of elk in Shadow creek and around Buck Meadows.   It is a good tag if you can get in there before the recreation users start tearing around.  At least that was my experience.

Good luck and keep us posted.
